Major Al-Qaeda operative killed in US missile strike: official
« on: November 19, 2008, 06:51:58 AM »
major Al-Qaeda operative of Arab origin was among six militants killed overnight in a suspected US missile strike in northwest Pakistan, a senior security official told AFP Wednesday.
Security sources identified the militant as Abdullah Azam al-Saudi, a senior member in Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.

"He was a senior commander of Al-Qaeda and was involved in recruiting and training of fighters," the senior official said.

According to US intelligence shared with Pakistan, al-Saudi was the main link between Al-Qaeda's senior command and Taliban networks in the Pakistani border region, an Islamabad-based senior security official said.

"He was the man coordinating between Al-Qaeda and Taliban commanders on this side of the border, and also involved in recruiting and training fighters," the official told AFP.

He is the second high-profile Al-Qaeda operative killed in recent US missile strikes in Pakistan's rugged tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Egyptian Al-Qaeda operative Abu Jihad al-Masri, described by the US as Al-Qaeda's propaganda chief, was killed in a missile strike in Pakistan in the early hours of November 1.

He was among several rebels killed when two missiles fired by a suspected US spy drone hit a truck in the North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan, security officials said.

I'm glad bush took Obama's advice and began hitting targets in pakistan.

It was an unpopular position at first, and Mccain bashed Obama for it incessently.  But even Sarah palin agreed with it later, and we see Bush has employed the tactic now as well.

Mccain himself modified his position, later saying "we don't discuss operations" after specifically ruling out such actions.

I guess it's all about teaching old dogs new tricks.  These strikes illustrate the ability of Bush to learn from new thinkers like President-Elect Obama.

Thanks for sharing, HH6.

Yeah...we've been doing this quietly since well before any of the "hope and change" machine got rolling. There hasn't been a single Obama pronouncement on defense, the war, the military, that has been original. Either it was put forward by somebody else, already being planned, or already being done. Nice try. Bush did not, nor would ever, take the advice of a community organizer.

And if u want to debate that, by all means lets go...GI Bill----Webb. VA affairs...already passed by Congress...operations in Pakistan..already being done...ur not cleared for that info. An article came out 2 weeks ago detailing a National Security finding, which stated that we will go anywhere that AQ is, regardless of national sovernty. U honestly think Obama came up with cross border attacks.  ::) The political situation in both Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan have made more open attacks neccesary and  reported. There are organizations u guys will never hear about conducting raids world wide, on AQ sites, including inside Pakistan. Its been going on since 2002 and will continue. The bigger operations have been made more possible because of the political situation inside Pakistan.

Killing this guy or Bin Laden will have alot of luck involved. We're talkling about finding two guys in about the most remote and impossible piece of real estate in the world. The folks around him won't sell them out and the locals fear and respect Bin Laden. Hopefully they get lucky.

Only way we have any chance of slowing down these douche bags is by hitting them where they think they're safe, and that's in Pakistan. This is one time where bringing the fight to them is what we need to do. Never going to happen if all we're doing is trying to stop them from coming into Afghanistan as the senior leadership probably never crosses the border.
