Need Help From Fellow Getbiggers To Own Professer
« on: November 19, 2008, 05:47:28 PM »
A professer in my exercise physiology class today gave a quiz with one of the questions being..."Out of these elite male athletes who would you expect to have the lowest body fat % ?"

a) swimmers
b) marathon runners
c) bodybuilders
d) basketball player

In my infinite getbig knowledge picked Bodybuilders seeing as he didnt specify year round...he simply asked for lowest BF%

he said the answer was marathon runners which i argued for a long time with him...ultimately he said if i could bring peer reviewed proof that BB's have a lower BF than Marathon runners I get my points back...

All you internet millionaires and getbig scholars time to put in work and show this asshole professer what getbig is all about!! :)

Peer-reviewed proof is gonna be the hard part. What academic is gonna get funding for that research. Probably gonna have to use anecdotal evidence, or on-line stuff.  :-\

why dont you ask him to provide the proof, otherwise why did he put it on the quiz...IF there are no studies then he is wrong and you should get your points back.

Considering most bodybuilders are well over 8 to 10% most if not all of the time, I would say the most marathone runners are easily under 10%...Now does a certain % of competitive bodybuilders get under 6% for a very short time? Yes but its not ever measureable on the map when it comes to marathon runners as a whole

I would tend to go with the basketball player. It fall along the same lines as sprinters, and since sprinters generally carry more muscle and less BF than marathon runners, the basketball player would tend to fall along the same lines as the sprinter.........a la interval training or workouts. Why he would mention BB'ers in the same breath as basketball players, swimmers and marathon runners is beyond me.

here's another problem... he believe he KNOWS that bodybuilders have bodyfat at a higher level than marathon runners... yet he doesn't have any PEER REVIEWED materials either.

he's jut working off an assumption.  If he can provide evidence of marathoner's level, but not a BBer, how the hell can he know he has the right answer?

Alternatively, look up bodyfat % tests of Bbers on youtube.  If you can find ONE you already have more empirical data than he has...

how did he ascertain the answer if he doesn't have any peer-reviewed studies?

i mean, hell, if you want anecdotal evidence notice that BB'ers only maintain their bodyfat for a few hours, while marathoners stay in that shape for a long time.

not to mention friggin sprinters probably have lower BF than marathoners.

While the average marathon runner or even the majority of them do indeed have very low bodyfat levels, being a marathon runner doesn't automatically equate to being the leanest bunch of the lot. There are plenty of 'normal' people who run the occasional marathon and even a couple of bodybuilders do it / have done it (along with people from nearly all walks of life). You can run a marathon while being around 20% bf, although it ain't gonna be easy unless you do it all the time, in which case you will be lean due to the sheer volume of 'work' done.

On the other hand, a bodybuilder competes and is judged onstage in a contest where nearly all of them have very low bodyfat levels. The leaner they are, the more it is to their advantage and on top of being lean, they are also dehydrated to show off maximum definition.

There are always exceptions (some swimmers are leaner than even bodybuilders for example), but if we are talking about measuring the levels of bodyfat during the time of the event / contest, bodybuilders would be leaner than marathon runners.

It's a stupid question to begin with. It obviously would depend on the individual person, and with bodybuilders you need to be more specific...for example, are you referring to their bodyfat % on contest day or their average bodyfat % throughout the year? Also, any athlete can get fat in the "offseason", marathon runners included. Alot of marathon runners and swimmers eat a ton of calories, primarily from carbs for energy, and really aren't that lean. Then again, you have alot of Kenyan guys who are probably in the low single digits. I would argue that the average sprinter is actually leaner than the average marathon runner. If I had been given this question, I would probably have picked basketball player (assuming average bodyfat % throughout the year, as the question did not specify).

well played-

put the burden of proof on him.

ask him for his peer reviewed study comparing all groups at the same time under the same conditions.

he cannot provide proof any more than you can.

you win.
