1971 Mr. Olympia: Arnold competes unopposed!
« on: November 27, 2008, 12:44:16 AM »
September 25, 1971. Paris, France.

For the first time, the show was held outside of New York. The Mr. Olympia contest was held in Paris a few days after the NABBA Mr. Universe was held in London. The IFBB Mr. Universe was also held in the same arena as the Mr. Olympia.

In this Mr. Olympia, Arnold competed unopposed. Sergio filed his application to compete in July, but was later disqualified after competing in the 1971 NABBA Pro Mr. Universe the week before. This was the first year that the IFBB instituted its rule to disqualify competitors who compete in non-sanctioned events (e.g. for rival organisations such as the NABBA.) Convenient for Arnold, as Sergio was in stellar shape. Instead, Sergio was allowed to put on an exhibition posing session for the crowd.

Arnold was in the shape of his life; rivalling the 1973 and 1974 Mr. Olympia appearances. This was Arnold's second Mr. Olympia victory and set the standard for Sergio vs. Arnold III the following year.

Small wonder Oliva stopped competing in the Olympia during the 70s after the 71 and 72 debacles! The fact that no one else was in the contest such as Nubret or Oliva is absurd.

One thing that i've always noticed was that it was only when he stayed heavy that high thighs were substantial, when he lost some of that weight it came right off the legs.

I actually think Sergio was in better shape when this shot was taken in 1971 @ 233lbs than the shape he showed up in as a guess poser @ the 1971 O.

Arnold's arms look like they measure around 22 inches! Simply out of this world size.

A rare back lat spread from the champ and some more shots of Sergio guestposing. He was dialed in, ready for battle.

That shot was actually taken in 1972 shortly before the Olympia when Sergio was under the guidance of Arthur Jones.

People can say what they want about Arnold's legs, but in this pic, they are decent sized and the separation is about as good as you will ever see. In 75 and 80, of course, they didn't look like this.

Agreed, i think it confirms that when he lost weight it came off the legs first, because at higher weights they looked pretty solid actually.

I have a vintage muscle magazine that states it was in '72. Untill YOU provide proof otherwise, I'm going with 1972, "mate".

If possible, I'd like to keep this and other contest threads strictly with pics that relate to the specific contest.

johnny1 and Pollux, maybe you guys can debate this over PM or start a new thread on the subject.

I'm not gonna PM this clown for a debate. You're a cool cat, GoneAway. I'll respect your wishes, dawg. I'm done with this Johnny1 character.

I'm surprised no one competed against Arnold for the '71 Olympia title. He was the new "kid" in town who had only won the Olympia once, and no one dared to try and tackle him (ie. Draper, Columbu, Zane, etc.)?

By the way, had Sergio competed in '71 for the Olympia title, I think it would've been a bigger/better battle than the '72 Olympia. Sergio looked fuckin' AMAZING!  :o 8)

The review of the contests suggests that Franco may have been going to do battle with Arnold and Sergio, but he was DQed for competing as a pro in the 1971 IFBB Mr. World, held September 12. I guess Franco was still an amateur at the time.

In the end, I guess it was the same old story as in Sergio's 1968 win - no one thought they could beat Arnold!

No problem. Thanks for getting back on track and keep those Sergio pics coming! That relaxed shot is much better quality than the one I posted earlier, which washed out a bit of detail.
