You don't need a machine to record BMI. Unless you count a scale and a ruler as "expensive machines".

BMI is just a function of weight vs height. You mean bodyfat percentage, right?

No, advanced machines give body composition reports. They shouldn't call them "BMI machines," but they do. Maybe the doctors aren't calling them the right thing. They are body composition machines, but the majority of the time the doctors just call it "getting a BMI." Maybe it's easy to say.

It tells percentage of and pounds of fat, ECM (fluids) and BCM (muscle). This is useful because you know what you're gaining and/or losing, of course. It's fun, because you can experiment with your training and figure out what ACTUALLY yields the most muscle. For instance, you can run 2-month experiments on yourself, or even 1 month.

It is a RJL Systems "Quantum II" body composition analyzer. Apparently my doctors are lazy and just say "he needs a BMI" every time. 15 pages worth of information is printed out to me each time.

Keep in mind not all body composition analyzers are equal. This one is supposed to be an exceptional machine.
You generally get what you pay for; a $40 BCA will not be accurate at all, the $2,000+ ones will be.

Get a DEXA scan, or even caliper measurements from a competent analyst. Far more precise than bioelectrical impedence. Your level of hydration greatly skews results from bioelectrical impedence.

However, BEI is good if you use it every day, at the same time everyday (say, in the morning when you wake up). That way, you can track changes. Who cares if a machine says you're 7%, and another says you're 10%. All that matters is that you see changes week over week.

This is a good point. So, you're basically saying the cheap $60 body composition analyzers would work to let you know whether you're gaining muscle, even if the numbers aren't perfect, right?

As long as it's consistent with itself, right? This reminds me of the scales. For example, I know my scale reads 3 pounds lighter than the actual weight (probably to make fatasses feel better), so I can just add 3 pounds to know the actual weight.

That's something that's very difficult for the eye to detect. This is very useful, because you can adjust and eventually end up on the most productive routine for you, individually.
