Actually i read an article about gladiator's nutrition in old rome. They ate a lot of beans and (cheap) meat to get huge. As for Da Vinci: These are anatomical studies done on dead bodies. The skin is cut away to reveal the muscles.
They were actually vegetarians for the most part, beans and barley, they were even called barley men.
This is art, Seva. These are example of 'idealized' forms, most of them are sculptures. Nothing alien about them. You'd learn this in, say, Art 101. Pretty basic stuff.
