get rid of thongs, steroid abuse, don't let bodybuilders do interviews.

But then, it wouldn't be bodybuilding anymore.

Why would anybody want to?  Name one hobby/activity/sport that was improved when it became "mainstream?"

immediately getting rid of the thongs.

i have thought about this very question many times.

i feel some sort of reality tv show like featuring young up and coming bodybuilders would propel bodybuilding back into the mainstream.

the ifbb/weider would have to fund the show, as no tv exec would touch this with a barge pole. although the millions they make each year should cover a low budget show.

think ice road trukers style, a low budget, character driven show with the personalities driving the interest rather than training, diet. as joe public isn't really interested in this stuff as intimately as we are.

this would get them more interested in the training and diet, and subtle aspects of bodybuilding as they watch fat guys/girls go from fat to buff over 12-16 weeks.

although different training styles, diet styles, lifestyles should be part of the character choices, to show the different challenges each bodybuilder faces.

you have to remember, the golden years of bodybuilding was never about joe public admiring the great bodies ( that was only a small part) it was thanks to arnold's personality and charisma and pumping iron movie.

you may not get another arnold, but you will get a host of different characters/personalities like they have in big brother, where each person will appeal to certain demographics.

throw in the odd delusional like goodrum/AXA and you have a winning show, and a new interest in bodybuilding is born

DK, I don't know if I would consider polo "mainstream"  Not exactly receiving media coverage on a national level and the average person could only tell you the minimum about it.

Tennis.

Well, lets keep it in perspective.  Let's say within the last 100 years.  Or we could make the argument for the olympics, etc...

I think a big brother style program would be great, you could have Vince Goodrum and a few other people living in a house with their every move documented and at the end they would compete against eachother.

yip.

obviously i wouldn't touch the subject of steroids either.

if the athletes take supplements like muscletech etc while going through this tansformation you have an advertisers dream come true - our products can make you lose all this fat and grow all this muscle etc.

you could even have it like ultimate fighter, where a specific guru i.e. milos, chad, palumbo, disgusted, mcneal etc each work with a specific athlete to see who has the best methods.  milos is also quite charismatic, chick always comes across well, as does shawn ray, kamali. plus there is some rivalry there too, that would make for interesting viewing.  ;)

I think Vince is already involved with The Biggest Loser...

you could also have past bodybuilders training and dieting a young up and comer, like ronnie vs dorian, nasser vs milos  :o

that would be great, ronnie and dorian are certainly interesting characters.

The sport would benefit from more exposure im a lot of ways:

Athletes would be paid more and would be able to focus more of their time on training.

The physiques would improve, as people with great genetics find bodybuilding a lucrative sport to spend their time on they would be less likely to pursue other sports like football.

More income into the industry would mean that companies had higher revenues thus meaning their R+D would logically have more money. This would lead to better existing products and more research would likely lead to new products coming to fruition.

I don't think so.  You would end up with fitness model builds because that's what the mainstream prefers.  The supplement industry isn't exactly hurting right now.

my plan would be as such...

1. create a more interesting stage entrance...sort of like mma and ucf

2. have athletes create strongers characters...add a little bit of wwe

3. posing routines be judgeded more and have a higher prize money

4. only show arnold classics or olympia

5. be able to wear their sponsor in the trunks

1.yes
2.yes
3.yes, and ban the gay girating of ass cheeks etc - bodybuilding has a negative mainstream image enough, to add homosexuality overtones as well is very bad.
4. ??? i don't understand, can you explain?
5.no, it could be a distraction from the physiques, although i would not be opposed to robes etc having sponsors, on the way to the stage (like the wwe enterance theme you spoke of)

It will never happen, Sorry but it's true. I never thought bodybuilding should be an Olympic sport. I did hope it would be on ESPN like back in the day. ESPN cut it out a while back, I guess since all the Steroid issues in the Mainstream media. Hollywood should however use Bodybuilders in more movies though.
