Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
« on: December 05, 2008, 11:43:26 AM »
Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler has been getting rave reviews from critics everywhere. Especially for Rourkes performance (tipped as a Oscar nomination worthy), which going by what I've read and seen on the trailer, looks fucking awsome.

I can't fucking wait to see this.

Also lovin' the Springsteen song he wrote for this film.

In theaters: December 17, 2008

Genre: Drama

Director: Darren Aronofsky

Cast: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

Back in the late 80s, Randy The Ram Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life — trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy The Ram back into his world of wrestling. Director Darren Aronofsky presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home inside the ring. THE WRESTLER had its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

the trailer is AMAZING. brought a tear to my eye

I could not see nic cage playing the lead in this movie (as he was the initial choice for the lead role)

If mickey rourke doesn't win a oscar, it will because hollywood doesn't want to give its most prestigous award to someone portraying a "phony rassler"

Darren does an amazing job channeling life on "the indies" for the aging "superstar"

Wow. Mickey's been the template for how to do everything wrong in Hollywood for years, but - Damn! - that looks really, really good.  :o

Looks great.  I'm a huge Rourke fan.  I really liked him as Marv in Sin City.

Has anyone ever heard of a movie called Buffalo '66. It has Rourke in it. I think it might be my favorite movie of all time, but I know it's not popular and doubt that many people have seen it. I think that it came out in 1996.

I wonder if that's who he wanted to base his look on?  also, the deal in the movie with his daughter reminds me of Jake "The Snake" Roberts in the documentary movie, if you saw it.

Oh yeah, totally on both counts. Funny, cause the first thought when I saw Rourke was, "shit, DDP". Then, the whole daughter thing, was Jake all over again.

Those are good signs of it being realistic.  I've heard nothing but good reviews on it.
