Believe it or not, I used to be of the opinion that Nasser was the clear winner.  Then, I watched the video, which completely changed my opinion. Dorian had such thickness and density from all angles, which is something missing on Nasser.  I expected Nasser's physique to really pop, but it never really did.  The imbalance between his front and back is even more apparent on video than in photos.  Nasser on that day, may have had a more pleasing look than that of Yates, but he was much too incomplete in terms of overall development to win the title.

there was never an imbalance between nasser's front and back in terms of size and thickness, the imbalance ws only in details.. in side poses the details of the back r not seen so there is no point to say so..

i too watched the videos of mr. 95 and 97 and for me it's the same as in pics but videos expose dorian's supriority over nasser in posing more than pics..

so if you are talking about imbalance, what about the crystal clear imbalance between dorian's right arm and his left??.. his left arm looked not only very small but also deformed.. in certain shots it looked smaller than his left forearm!!.. dorian was the clear winner in 1995 from the video and from pics. and felt behind nasser in 1997 in the video and also pics.. pics r no more than a shot from the video..

i respect the fact that dorian decided to compete after this fatal left tri injury but i dont respect the blind judges who gave him the title.. they were really blind not only 2 give him the title but also for not noticing his injury during the show.. they knew after when dorian narrated the story in magazines.. really shameful!!..

The torn bicep only comes into play during 1  mandatory, being the front double biceps shot.  Otherwise, it is a non issue.  People harp on the bicep, but seem to turn a blind eye when their favorite is lacking in an area.  Missing an entire back, in my mind, and it would seem in the judges minds also, is much more pertinent.  Indeed, Nasser looked superior from the front in some poses.  But the rational for Yates winning clearly had a lot to do with the shots once things turned to the side and back.  Yates had too much overall development for Nasser to contend with.  It is easy for people to judge simply on a select few front shots and bestow a victory on the athlete who looks more pleasing in those shots, but the judging panel looks at overall development.  During Dorian's reign, even while at his best, there were others who may have looked more pleasing, but according the judging guidelines, were lacking in overall development and therefore, did not win.

r u sure dorian's small deformed arm was clear only in the front d.b.??.. so wht abt the front relaxed, the left side relaxed, front lat spread, rear d.b.??.. yes even in the front lat spread and the rear d.b. his left arm looked the same size of his forearm.. also during his routine and in many shots his weakness was exposed in front of anyone with good eyes.. he was lucky some of the judges were his friends and some were blind and some were just followers to the fibb desire.. check the below pics..

I'm presenting an interpretation on the basis of how the contest itself was evidently judged.  You are free to disagree and interpret the contest differently, that is your prerogative.  Simply put, Nasser knew what he had to do in order to put himself in a better position to win the title.  It was well publicized that he needed to improve his back substantially.  He didn't, therefore he didn't win.  As a result, it shouldn't come as any surprise that his mantle is devoid of a Sandow.  Either his back was a bodypart that simply didn't respond, or he didn't make the necessary adjustments to his training in order to improve it enough.  From what I understand, his training form for back exercises was extremely poor.
