Arthur Jones pointed out that the lats were the largest muscles in the upper body. He also observed the growth-stimulating effects of squats. He concluded that the movements that hit the largest muscles the hardest stimulated the most growth throughout the body. Utilizing the idea, he built this Nautilus Pullover machine that was designed to isolate the Lats as much as possible. He believed the use of this machine may be like an upper-body squat and cause growth in the lats that was previously unimaginable, plus further facilitate the "knock-off effect" (indirect effect) of causing more growth throughout the rest of the body.
