Gotta agree with you here, its a way to make money for the drug companies.  Just look at the process the fda goes through to approve a drug.  They take a study, done by the drug company, and evaluate it.  Thats absurd, the fda most of the time, doesn't even do their own research.

there are lots of very sick people with serious mental diseases on which psychopharmacology has worked wonders.  the diseases include schizophrenia, bi-polar disease, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, various Anxiety Disorders, Dementia, Dissociative Disorders, Impulse Control Disorders, and yes Depressive disorders.  sure some people abuse the meds, but for hundreds of thousands of other, its the difference between leading a somewhat normal life vs being locked away in a mental institution or prison.

I wasn't trying to say the drug approach doesn't work. Just making a statement that this is what they do. Go to a psychiatrist for any problem and you're leaving with an Rx.

Drugs work and there's no way to treat bi-polar or schizophrenia in any other way.

When is drug use warranted when dealing with mental illness? If you started hearing voices what would you do? If you had anxiety so bad you couldn't leave your house what would you do?

I only now looked at the video. I've read this guy's stuff before and he isn't a retard. He is right, it not a disease if it can't be verified by objective tests i.e. if there is no organic source. But we know that some people can't function in society unless medicated. Call it a "personality trait" or whatever, but we know drugs help some people function.

I agree with Szasz, it's not good that people are forced to take medicine.

It's a bit more complex than that. He wouldn't deny that some people behave in a way that is delusional and out of the norm. It's the label given these behaviors that is the problem and the result of it being defined as mental  illness or or disease.

He is not opposed to the practice of psychiatry if it is non-coercive. He maintains that psychiatry should be a contractual service between consenting adults with no state involvement.

So depression isn't something that should ever be medicated? Depression is often helped with drugs - does that mean there was a "real illness"? Where do you draw the line for what should be treated?
