I agree, Daly is one of the very very few on tour that is that far out of shape. But Daly has been playing golf almost all of his life, the dude has so much un-tapped potential to win (probably more than anyone on tour) it's rediculous. As far as it being a sport? it most definatly is, tell me where it isn't.

I've told you where it isn't. It REQUIRES ZERO ATHLETIC ABILITY. THUS VIRTUALLY ANYONE CAN DO IT.

I find it funny, that you can say that comp. bbing is not a sport (I agree, btw), but something like Golf (which also requires no athletic ability), is one in your eyes.

Swinging a metal rod does not require any great degree of physical exertion that is why any fat and or out of shape can "play" and actually "compete". They can be alcoholics, obese and even chain smoke if they like. Sorry, but anyone who can be called a world champion at something like this and fit into that catagory is not an athlete. Calling golf a sport is a stretch , but by the purest definition of the word sport it is and so is bodybuilding.

Well said. Although neither Golf or Comp. BBing is a sport. Competitions, hobbies, pastimes, (and in bbing's case) a pageant.

So golf is a sport but golfers are not athletes.  They are just patrons of the sport

I'm not saying that golf is a sport, but if you look up the definition in the dictionary it fits into the definition of one, but so does BB.

No, but it requires a great deal of skill. The golfers of today are much better than they were 20 or 25 years ago simply because 90% of them understand why it's so important to be physically strong and better conditioned. They have trainers, Chiros, physical therapists and massage therapists that tour with them. IMO, it's one of the most difficult sports because pros are playing for millions, the mental stress alone would make the normal person crack. Make the cut and place last every week and your damn near rich.

Yeah, the initial start up is expensive, maybe around $1200 for a decent set, but you can get good used clubs for about 3-400.00 driver $200, putter $100 or so and about 20.00 for a dozen decent balls.

BB is a funny one to explain. What these guys do requires a great degree of athletic ability which includes obviously lifting weights, and generally doing some type of cardio regime. There heart rate and BP are generally good and have very good stamina. Now, I'm not saying all of them do, but try and put any golfer in the gym to duplicate what bodybuilders do and worst case scenario would be a heart attack and the very least they would not come close to finishing the workout. Anyone shy of being paralyzed and in congestive heart failure can "play" golf. They may not due well, but they can duplicate the movements. The end result of a bodybuilding show I agree does not require any type of athletic ability although it does require flexibility.

A lot of things require skill, but that does not make you an athlete. Also, why is it important to be in better condition today for golf and how does that equate to being better golfer?

Technology of equipment is alot more advanced that it used to be, 20-25 years ago the average driving distance was about 240-260 yards on tour, 240-260 is what the average 16 handicapper is hitting now on any course around. ame with Irons. That being said, courses have to be designed to be longer, about 1500 yards longer. Long story short, you have to be (or should be in better shape and better conditioned). Take a look at that video of Tiger Woods I just posted. He walked a 7000 yard course up and down hills for 5 days (91 holes) on a torn ACL. How many bodybuilders have backed out of a show for one rediculous reason or another? Most people (professional athletes and anylists) have said that is probably one of the greatest wins in sports history because of what Tiger had to endure walking 91 holes and winning a major on a torn ACL.

I would think the fact that the technology of the equipment being better would mean that a golfer would need less skill or at least less strength, kind like a powerlifter using a bench shirt. Oh, a few year back the mail lady was walking around (13 miles daily) with a torn ACL and didn't know it for weeks so I am not sure what you mean by the Tiger story, but motivation is a hell of a thing like winning millions and losing your job.

No, because the courses get harder. Most of the fairways on a PGA tournament course are anywhere from 15-20 yards wide.

I am still not sure what you mean? Let me ask you this, what clubs are better to play with as far as how far you can drive, todays clubs or ones from 25 years ago?

Hell, the average fat housewife with plantar warts walked more than while doing their Christmas shopping.  ;D
