Report: Blagojevich to name Obama successor

I really wish they could remove this clown.

Report: Blagojevich to name Obama successor

(CNN) -- Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is expected Tuesday to name former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate, CNN affiliates the Chicago Tribune and WLS-TV reported, citing sources familiar with the decision.

Burris' appointment would fill President-elect Barack Obama's former Senate seat. Blagojevich is to announce his choice at a news conference at 3 p.m. ET.

Burris, 71, is African-American. According to the newspaper, he expressed interest in the Senate seat shortly after the November 4 election.

The news comes as Democratic leaders in the Senate warned that they would reject any Senate pick made by Blagojevich, who faces criminal charges.

The governor was arrested this month on federal corruption charges and has since ignored calls to resign.

Although Blagojevich, 52, has not commented publicly on the charges, his lawyer Ed Genson said the governor had done nothing wrong and does not intend to step down.

FBI agents arrested Blagojevich on December 9 after federal prosecutors alleged, among other things, that he had tried to "sell" Obama's former Senate seat. It is the sole authority of the Illinois governor to name a successor who would serve the remaining two years of Obama's term.

Blagojevich names Obama successor

(CNN) -- Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Tuesday named former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate.

Burris' appointment would fill President-elect Barack Obama's former Senate seat. Blagojevich is to announce his choice at a news conference at 3 p.m. ET.

Burris, 71, is African-American. Earlier this month, he said that despite the scandal associated with the seat, he wanted the job.

Blagojevich was arrested this month on federal corruption charges and has since ignored calls to resign.

Burris does not have to be formally approved by the Senate to be appointed by Blagojevich. But the Senate could refuse to seat Burris, or it could seat him and investigate the manner in which he was appointed, and unseat him if senators discover any wrongdoing.

Two Democratic officials tell CNN that Senate Democratic leaders are planning to block Blagojevich's appointment of Burris.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, has threatened not to seat anyone the governor appoints and has called for Blagojevich, a Democrat, to step down.

In a statement released Tuesday, Reid said it was "truly regrettable that ... Gov. Blagojevich would take the imprudent step of appointing someone to the United States Senate who would serve under a shadow and be plagued by questions of impropriety."

"We again urge Gov. Blagojevich to not make this appointment. It is unfair to Mr. Burris, it is unfair to the people of Illinois and it will ultimately not stand," Reid said. "The governor must put the interests of the people of Illinois and all Americans first by stepping aside now and letting his successor appoint someone who we will seat."

Although Blagojevich, 52, has not commented publicly on the charges, his lawyer Ed Genson said the governor has done nothing wrong and does not intend to step down.

FBI agents arrested Blagojevich on December 9 after federal prosecutors alleged, among other things, that he had tried to "sell" Obama's former Senate seat. It is the sole authority of the Illinois governor to name a successor who would serve the remaining two years of Obama's term.

They need to reject this appointment.  This criminal just doesn't get it.

. . .

The Chicago Tribune reported that Burris, 71, has been interested in the appointment since Obama's Election Day victory, though he was not considered a top candidate for the job. However, he reportedly stepped up his lobbying effort after the governor's arrest.

Burris is a prolific contributor to Democratic candidates, Blagojevich among them. State campaign finance records show he and his wife have donated $4,500 to Blagojevich's campaign fund since 2004. Burris has also contributed to Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

Actually, the legal case against him seems pretty weak.  He knows it, fitz knows it, and so do the rest of the corrupt liberal democrats in IL.

That is why they are pushing him rto resign so fast because they know there is a good chance he will be the case.

Just talking about committing a crime is not a crime unless you take an "affirmative step in furtherance" of the crime in order for it to be considered attempt or the actual crime charged.

Fitz blew his wad to early on this.

I'm not so sure.  I was trying to make my way through the stuff they submitted, but it's a long read.  http://www.scribd.com/doc/8759869/Blagojevich-Complaint

Seems like they have a lot of evidence that this guy was totally corrupt.

Prosecutor is asking for more time:

U.S. Attorney Seeks Extension to Indict Blagojevich
Patrick Fitzgerald has asked the court to grant him 90 days to review massive amounts of materials in the case against the Illinois governor.

FOXNews.com

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

CHICAGO -- U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has asked a federal judge in Chicago to give him a 90-day extension to seek an indictment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Federal prosecutors normally have 30 days to file an indictment against a defendant. That deadline would have been Jan. 7, and the extension would give prosecutors until April 7 instead.

Authorities arrested Blagojevich on Dec. 9 on corruption charges that accuse him of trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder. Blagojevich has denied any wrongdoing.

In a five-page motion submitted to the court Wednesday, Fitzgerald said that the current holiday season has limited the dates and times that the prosecutors have been able to present evidence to the grand jury.

The prosecutor said "multiple witnesses" have come forward in recent weeks and investigators have to review "thousands of intercepted phone calls."

He said given the volume of evidence involved, 30 days was insufficient.

"The investigation includes multiple defendants and potential defendants as well as thousands of intercepted  phone calls, and additional factors warranting an extension of time," he wrote.

"The government cannot complete its investigation and appropriately conclude the investigation within the time allowed under The Speedy Trial Act," the motion continues.

In the final page of the motion, Fitzgerald wrote that pursuant to phone calls and meetings "over the past week," Blagojevich's attorney indicated he does not object to the motion.

This motion will be presented before Chief Judge James Holderman on Monday afternoon.

Gov. could be impeached next week

January 3, 2009

The Illinois House will meet several days next week. A spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan says the chamber may vote on a recommendation from the special committee studying whether Blagojevich should be impeached.

It would take a simple majority vote for the House to impeach -- which basically means accusing him of misconduct.

Then the state Senate would hold a trial to determine if the governor is guilty. Conviction requires a two-thirds majority.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the committee studying impeachment will invite Roland Burris to testify. Burris was Blagojevich's surprise selection for Obama's seat last week.

Reid was trying to influence the selection.  Sounds like his hands are dirty too.

Sen. Reid Called Gov. Blagojevich to Discuss Filling Obama's Senate Seat

FOXNews.com

Saturday, January 03, 2009

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid didn't want Rep. Jesse Jackson in the Senate, a point he made clear to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in a conversation about filling Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The Nevada Democrat made one call to Blagojevich on Dec. 3 to discuss the seat vacated by the president-elect, Reid spokesman Jim Manley confirmed. Six days later, authorities arrested Blagojevich for allegedly trying to sell Obama's seat.

Reid accused Blagojevich Saturday of leaking and distorting conversations about the process of filling the vacant seat..

"Gov. Blagojevich's efforts to try to tarnish others while the cloud of suspicion continues to grow over him are shameful, as are his efforts to further betray the public trust and sow seeds of division," said Reid in the prepared statement, which also called for Blagojevich's resignation.

Reid, however, stopped short of explaining his side of the conversation.

"Gov. Blagojevich appears to be trying to distract attention from his daunting legal problems and damaged credibility by distorting information about private phone calls between himself and other public officials," Reid said.

The Sun-Times reported Friday that during their discussion Reid pressured Blagojevich not to appoint Jesse Jackson Jr., Danny Davis or Emil Jones because he feared they'd lose to a GOP opponent in the next election.

Jackson and Davis are both Democratic congressmen from Illinois, and Jones is the Illinois Senate president and Obama's political godfather.

Instead, Reid pressed Blagojevich to appoint either state Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, sources told the newspaper.

William Walls of the Committee for a Better Chicago called Reid's opposition to the appointment of Jackson, Davis or Jones, all of whom are black, an act of racism.

"The U.S. Senate is an institution that is primarily white and has been forever and some people are more comfortable with people of their own kind," Walls told FOXNews.com. "Harry Reid seems to be one of those people."

Walls has vowed to rally activists in an effort to politically defeat Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin and Secretary of State Jesse White if they don't support Blagojevich's appointment  for the seat, Roland Burris.

Walls accused Reid of using White, who has refused to sign off on the appointment, to block Burris.

"It looks as though when Blagojevich didn't do what (Reid) asked, he turned to Jesse White," he said. "It looks like he's going to achieve his objectives at all costs."

Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, said Reid needs to explain his actions.

Reid "took the extraordinary step to lobby against two sitting U.S. congressmen and the state Senate majority leader in Illinois, and instead told Gov. Blagojevich that he supported an appointment for an individual who recently lost a U.S. House election," he said in a written statement, referring to Duckworth.

"The people of Illinois deserve a simple explanation from Sen. Reid," he continued. "Why does he believe these three Illinois officeholders are 'unelectable' to the U.S. Senate?"

Manley couldn't immediately provide other details. But he said such calls are standard procedure, adding that Reid also spoke to the New York and Colorado governors after senators from those states accepted Obama administration jobs, leaving openings.

But Blagojevich spokesman Lucio Guerrero says the call shows Reid has a conflict of interest in vowing not to accept Burris for the seat.
