I cant give you a solid oppinion because we were close to him and i dont like commies either but, yes, many innocents died, just like in any other war, but 9 out of 10 were commies trying to destroy the country, they deserved to die.

One of the generals (the most brutal one, manuel "mamo" contreras), now in jail, in charge of the intelligence unit said once on tv when asked about all the missing people: "You know, the terrorists are cowards, they hide their faces, they fight UNDER the table, and thats why we had to fight back in the same way, under the table".

As for the missing ones, some are really "missed" (they are not missed, they are dead, their bones probably were used to feed the lions, who knows) and some others has been exposed not just now but for a long time, as fuckers leeching from the goverment when they are supposed to be missing  ::)

Alleged Pinochet victim turns up alive in Chile
By EDUARDO GALLARDO, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

(11-18) 12:08 PST SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) --

The reappearance of a man who was officially dead has shaken and outraged some in Chile, a nation that mourns 1,196 other political prisoners who vanished in the hands of a military dictatorship.

Human rights judge Carlos Gajardo said Tuesday he was questioning German Cofre, who turned up alive this month — and with a second family in Argentina.

Soldiers surrounded Cofre's house in 1973 and led him away to a secret prison. His wife never saw him again before she died in 1997.

An employee of the city street cleaning department and a Communist Party member, Cofre was one of thousands of leftists rounded up following the 1973 military coup.

Some, like current President Michelle Bachelet, were eventually released. Many others were known to have been killed. And some just vanished — presumably tortured, killed and buried in clandestine graves or tossed into the sea.

But Cofre apparently was released, and fled to the Argentine city of Mendoza, where he established a new family.

Back in Chile, his wife had him declared legally dead in 1991. A funeral was held in 1995 after experts wrongly identified as his remains found at a local cemetery. Deputy Interior Minister Felipe Harboe said the family received a government stipend granted to victims of Gen. Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship.

There is no evidence that the Chilean family knew Cofre was still alive, but an organization of relatives of the "disappeared" says that if Cofre lied to take advantage of the government compensation, he should be severely punished.

"We won't hide situations like this," said Lorena Pizarro, who leads the organization of relatives of the missing. She asked for a full investigation of the case.

Harboe said the case isn't likely to cast doubt on other cases of the missing because so many have been carefully studied over the years.

No one was ever been tried on charges of killing Cofre because the circumstances of his case were unclear.

"What we want is to fully clarify this case, to determine exactly what happened and make sure a case like this does not happen again," Harboe said.

You are wrong because this is not the first case, at least not the first public one, and yes there are many, theres a board full of "missing" people names @ the cemetery and through the years, more than 60 have been wiped out because they are alive, so yes, MANY is a good word, just as recently.

Hugo did you study anything besides serving mcdonalds?

I have to disagree with you about them deserving to die.

No matter what political color Pinochet claimed to be, he was a fascist and undemocratic war criminal, responsible for a dark age in Chile's history in my opinion.

No matter how you slice it, dice it, or try to re-write the history, Allende was elected by the Chileans.

He then was assassinated and replaced by a murderer and dictator in Pinochet.

We can argue all day about whether Allende was corrupt, if he was in the hands of the Soviet Union or in bed with Castro.

What it all boils down to is that he was elected in a democratic process and then Pinochet, did not respect that.

Democratic process but he ruined the country, ruined as in no food no money no nothing, the same ones that are now against pinochet are the ones that asked him and the army to bring allende down.

And the only good terrorist is the dead terrorist. Its hard to know what really happened here when most of the story comes out from people that "escaped" to canada and europe as refugees, when half of them were none than criminals from 3 hoods that saw an opportunity to go outside and live from european/canadian goverments.
