I kinda disagree on this and here's why.  If you don't train abs hard enough this can indeed cause them to distend.  A weak abdominal core is one of the reasons for bad distention (amongst others).   We hit our backs hard and the spinal erectors get developed with a lot of the big lifts (squats, deads etc) and this can cause a gross imbalance.  With a strong back and weak abdomen which one do you think is going to give out?  For a lot of guys the abs don't hypertrophy a lot to begin with, even with heavy ab work so working them isn't going to cause them to get thick to the point of sticking out grossly.  A lot of guys neglect ab work because they get hit with rack pulls, dead lifts, squats, heavy pressing etc but it's not enough work to keep a balanced core.

Just my thoughts.

Both arguments make some sense.  I'm not the OP, but I plan to add back in some ab work, but just using body weight, to keep them strengthend adequatley.

To Emmortals point, when I started squatting years ago, I was in Atlanta at a gym owned by Lex Luger and Sting.  Lex, seeing my poor form, taught me to squat properly, and I specifically remember him telling me that my ab to back strength ratio was out of whack and that I needed to work abs more often so I wouldn't screw up my lower back.

Now that I mention that gym, do you guys remember "Sable" from the Pro Wrestling world?  She used to work out there too and man was she hot in person.  Very nice too.  I loved Atlanta.

I'm not saying don't work the abs...not at all, I agree, working abs is important...I just believe you can get all you need from body weight exercises.

Myself, anytime I've done weighted ab exercises my midsections sticks out more...if I do any direct oblique training and it's even worse if I do a lot of deads from the floor, midsection looks a lot wider. Maybe that's just me

I agree about the deads off the floor. I just disagree about direct ab training.  At least for me and a lot of guys I know hitting the abs with direct work helps keep things balanced.

Direct ab work yes, I agree it needs to be done.

Direct ab work with added weight, that's what I'm saying is usually not a good idea for a lot of guys.

Big Rock.

This is all really interesting. I always thought that since abs weren't actually skeletal muscle, just essentially fluid balls, that training them only strengthen them and not ad any mass per-se. It was my impression that distention was due to fluid or adipose around the organs/gut.

Myself, I do body weight ab work every day as AJ mentioned, as part of warm-up. I keep them protected under a layer of flab, but they are there somewhere.

IMO alot of the distention is caused by people not actively training their transversus muscles(the inner abs) that keep your stomach in... getting a stomach massage will help tons too trust me, you'll poop like you've never pooped before if you get one and you'll easily loose 1-3 inches instantly

Never heard of a stomach massage. Who does that and does it come with a happy ending?
