Hawaii joblessness jumps to 10-year high

Hawai'i statewide unemployment jumped to 5.5 percent in December as an economic downturn took its toll on jobs.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported the rise Hawai'i's seasonally adjusted unemployment from November to December was ninth highest in the country.

It said the number of jobs here also shrunk compared to a month earlier.

Hawai'i unemployment has been rising as the state's economy sinks into a recession, though its rate remains lower than the national average of 7.2 percent.The seasonally adjusted unemployment December rate rose from 6.8 percent in November.

Hawai'i had the 14th lowest rate in the country. Wyoming was lowest at 3.4 percent. The highest was in Michigan at 10.6 percent.

Depends on where you live. There are parts of this island that get 80 to 100 inches a year and places like the airport that gets probably 10 to 20 a year. Mostly, it's sunny and the daytime temperature doesn't fluctuate more than 10 degrees all year.

Of course, if you would have done the right thing and accepted the UH scholarship you would know all this.

I know. And i wonder how my life would have differred. But they like absolutley sucked major ass at the time i was being recruited...0-forever record...gay uniforms complete with pastel green and a rainbow...Funny how they now have the best freaking uniforms in college football (yes better than texas tech) and contenders every year...

But my mom knew i wouldnt focus down there anyway.

I know. Weren't you recruited by Von Crappen? I wouldn't have played for him either.

But yeah, things have changed: new unis, winning tradition, very good players coming through every year, new facilities, etc.

We have two LBs who will probably not get drafted, but who I think are good enough to play in the NFL (Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard). Elimimian was the WAC defensive player of the year. Coulda been you.

Oahu, but I spend a lot of time on other islands (Maui, Big Island, Kauai, sometimes Molokai).

I'm all over.

Kailua is nice. Has one of the nicest beaches in the world. I actually love Waimanalo. Wife hates it. I really like Laie and Waialua (both on the north shore). Small towns. Beautiful.

I hate Waikiki. Too many people. Too much congestion. Only time I go there is for the zoo or to attend some event.

Doesn't take as much as you think particularly if you don't have a wife and kids. From an expense standpoint, it's just like any other large, high-cost-of-living city, but without the smog, crime, seasonal weather, and hectic lifestyle. Taxes are high.

I lived in Kohala. Best part of HI there is.

No way to support yourself though... bring your retirement!
