This is turning out to be a leviathon.

yeah - no doubt Congress has a bad habit (on both sides of the aisle) of loading up these large bills with all kinds of stuff.  I agree we should be very precise and strategic in how we spend our money.  I think there might also be the strategy of putting stuff in so that it can be taken out later as a concession

Bush whined about moveon.org

Obama whined about Rush

Not much difference here guys.

there really is no difference and I think (hopefully) in both cases the objection was to the content of the speech and not about the right to speak (or write).

Most power mad politicians hate free speech, debate, and openess.

That is why the first amendment is the most important of all.

This is a bad move strategically and its reactive instead of responsive.

He's giving RUSH more power by acknowledging he has influential power.

It would have been better to just ignore him publicly and undermine him between the lines.
I actually disagree.
Slamming back hard and heavy is what historically has been proven to work.
They get in charge of the agenda, and gets Limbaugh on the defence.
Regardless, they will come across as the Alpha males.

Compare it to someone who decided to ignore false allegations - Dukakis.
He was the target of a smear campaign that suggested that he somehow was responsible for setting a black murderer free and who killed again.
Dukakis choosed to ignore the accusations, 'stay above it'.
But to this day he's probably credited by those lies.
So hitting back - and hitting real fcuking hard - that's how you can beat attacks.

Frankly, I think Obama and his guys represent a generation of politicians that fully understands the power of the old and new media.

Obama does not want a food fight with Limbaugh.  Limbaugh will come out way ahead on that.

Zero will be seen as getting in the mud with a radio host, and limbaugh will get even bigger ratings and expose the farce that is the stimulus bill being pushed.

Dems launch anti-Limbaugh petition
Posted: 12:20 PM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

Democrats are launching a petition against Limbaugh over his recent comments.
(CNN) – In a bid to capitalize on Rush Limbaugh's recent comment that he hopes President Obama "fails," national Democrats launched a petition drive Wednesday taking direct aim at the conservative radio host.

"Jobs, health care, our place in the world — the stakes for our nation are high and every American needs President Obama to succeed," says the petition, sponsored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Stand strong against Rush Limbaugh's Attacks — sign our petition, telling Rush what you think of his attacks on President Obama."

Limbaugh told listeners last week he sharply disagrees with Republicans who have said they hope Obama succeeds as president, and particularly expressed frustration over what he viewed as the "absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care."

"If I wanted Obama to succeed, I'd be happy the Republicans have laid down," Limbaugh said. "I hope he fails."

The comment sparked outrage in Democratic circles, while defenders of the remark said it was made purely in the context of Obama's economic polices.

Still, the DCCC petition not only provides an outlet for Democratic anger at Limbaugh, but also serves as a vehicle to gain names and e-mail addresses, presumably for later use in fundraising and organizing efforts.

The petition follows reports Obama warned GOP congressional leaders last week that they should stop listening to the conservative talker, prompting Limbaugh’s response that the new president is "frightened of me."

“He’s obviously more frightened of me than he is [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell,” Limbaugh told listeners Monday. “He’s more frightened of me, then he is of say, [House Minority Leader] John Boehner, which doesn’t say much about our party.”

free speech is great

it's the content of the speech and not the "speaking" part that matters

I encourage everyone to state exactly what they believe and why they believe it

and never restrict freedom to express an opinion no matter how crazy it might seem

I think there is no accident that Limbaugh is becoming a target for the Democrats.

Actually, I believe it's an extremely shrewd move by the Democrats to target Rush Limbaugh, and using him to get to the Republicans.

There will be very hard to find a Democrat bad mouthing Palin, or even McCain.
Because that would make the Democrats look bad.

The Democrats have their own "Karl Roves mastermind" who probably figured out - and they are spot on IMO - that if the Democrats can keep associate the Republicans with guys like Limbaugh, Hannity, Rove, Cheney and other neocons, it will be very hard for the Republicans to wash away their old image.

Is that why Karl Rove was subpoened? I doubt it. But it won't hurt the Democrats to have his mug in TV hearings talking about the Bush administration.

In the past, Limbaugh was always the big game hunter. My guess is that these last few weeks are only the beginning of him being the prey.

This is my point about the Democrats being very media savvy. It used to be that they were owned by the Republicans in that area, but not so much anymore.

I disagree.  Rush Limbaugh isn't the leader of the party.  He doesn't set any agenda.  He doesn't speak for the party.  He's radio talk show host.  That's it.  The fact he is being targeted by Obama and Democrats smacks of desperation and very bad advice.

I agree that fighting and hitting hard is good strategy, but they need to target the right people.

Re-read my post.

I never claimed Limbaugh was the actual leader of the Republican Party.

I just stated that Democrats are using a sort of a dirty "guilt by association" tactics with Limbaugh and the GOP.

IMHO, I think you can expect the Democrats to continue to try to pin Rush Limbaugh to the Republican Party, and as a symbol for it.

Right or wrong, that's what I think they will do, and IMO, it is a move that should score them easy points.

Should the Democrats debate real issues with the real leaders of the serious GOP?
Of course, that would be preferable.

But they're part of the same political culture as the Republican Karl Rove.

As for Rush Limbaugh - the guy won't recover.

He's dead weight to the Republicans right now, and they will probably "disown" (sp?) him shortly.

I understood your post.  I wasn't saying you called him the leader of the party.  I was trying to say they (Democrats) need to focus on the party's leader(s) and not some entertainer.  They might as well target an actor like Dennis Miller.

I actually agree with you that they need to hit back.  I don't agree the target should be a radio talk show host.

Limbaugh won't recover from what?  The guy makes a gazillion dollars a year.  He has been the 800 pound gorilla on radio for about 20 years now.  He's not going anywhere.
