Antonio Margarito's License Suspended
« on: January 29, 2009, 05:49:23 AM »
is this how he busted up cotto and cintron?  who knows?  this will cost him a s##tload of dough down the road.

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 28) - Former welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito's license was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday while it investigates a plaster-like substance found under the boxer's hand wraps before his loss last weekend to Shane Mosley.

The commission also suspended the license of Margarito's trainer Javier Capetillo and asked both to appear at a hearing on Feb. 10.
The substance was bagged as evidence before the bout last Saturday at Staples Center and was being analyzed by the California Department of Justice, the commission said. The panel was still investigating whether any rules were violated.
Commission chairman Tim Noonan said the investigation stems from a commission rule that limits the amount and type of gauze and tape allowed under a fighter's glove. He said the commission has authority to discipline athletes when their actions are a "discredit to boxing." Reprimands could include fines, suspensions or revocation of licenses.
The commission did not say how long the investigation would last.
Bill Caplan, a spokesman for Margarito's promoter, said the boxer has obtained a lawyer and plans to attend the hearing.
"He expects to prove himself innocent," Caplan told The Associated Press.
Caplan said he did not have any information on what substance was found on the hand wraps or what evidence the boxer planned to present. He referred further comment to the boxer's promoter, Bob Arum, who did not immediately return a message left at his office LATE Wednesday.
Margarito, of Tijuana, Mexico, lost his WBA welterweight title to Mosley in nine rounds and dropped to 37-6 with 27 knockouts. The 30-year-old didn't win a single round on one judge's scorecard, one on another and two on the third before the ninth. He had his hands rewrapped before the fight after a complaint by Mosley's trainer.
Margarito was coming off an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Miguel Cotto six months ago.

Anyone who saw the way Coto's face was cut up during that fight must wonder if it was the result of hard punching or a weapon. JCollina

not that I think it would have mattered against shane since the fight wouldn't have lasted to take advantage of the plastered wrap.....I don't think most outside of boxing really realize how bad this is for this dude. This is 10X worse than even testing positive for roids in this sport.

And from what I hear in the boxing scene, nazeem richardson (shane's new trainer) only questioned the first wrap b/c of the amount of tape they used to seal it at the end (yes they can be very picky on this and I would assume he wanted to see that knuckle padding that is usually added halfway in the wrapping again).....he watched the second wrapping and that is when they noticed the grayish plaster looking substance included in the wrapping. They took that sample and them made them do the third and final wrap without the substance (I'm going to assume they made them make the extra knuckle padding from sratch this time) usually you already have one made to save time.

Isn't that something.

Said the substance was to harden as it was wet. Anyone that boxes knows your wraps (hands) sweat more and more as the fight or training goes along. I'm sure it was in the extra knuckle protection then they tried to finish the wrap over it thinking nobody would notice that padding looking kindy gray.

Boxers get their hands wrapped in front of a rep from their opponent AND the referee.  So how did this "plaster like substance" get in there?

I'm going to "assume" that they had this substance in the pre folded gauze that is normally applied to the knuckle area halfway inbetween your hand wrapping.

basically you get halfway through a hand wrap then a layer of extra gauze that is layered ontop of one another is placed over your knuckles for added protection...then the wrap is finished over that layer.....then tape is added to seal the wrap in the end.

I'm thinking they added that "substance" in the pre layered gauze for his knuckles. When they applied the layer and tried to finish the handwrap. the "grayish" coloring I'm thinking Nazeem may have "THOUGHT" he saw something weird during the first wrap and used the final tape off as a reason to re wrap the hand totally...which is legal.

and I'm guessing he (nazeem) wanted to see that gauze layer again...then BINGO..."why is it so gray?"..take it out...etc,etc. "what do we have here"

also if he used it against cintron twice and cotto this explains why margarito didn't want to rematch paul williams who not only BEAT margarito for his belt....but offered him 2X the amount he got to fight cotto PLUS avenge his loss.

basically it didn't work on a guy that isn't going to stand still but roll, slide...etc like a williams and mosley IMO.

this is all speculation on my part.

The biggest shame here is that Cotto won't be able to re-match him. Cotto needed to come back and beat him and gain his confidence back. Mosley winning and the hand wraps helped his confidence. But Cotto needs to beat him himself. We're not gonna see Margerito in the ring again at least until 2010. I still believe Miguel Cotto is the best welterweight out there. Remember even Muhammad Ali lost?

the best welter is paul williams...nobody wants to fight this guy...not even cotto.

dude had to give up his belt at 47 b/c the freaking no.1 contender within the same organization didn't even want to take the title shot...lol

he gave up his WBO belt b/c they won't allow him to hold 2 belts (at 47 or 54)if he fought for it. Basically his promotion has put out a "anybody from 47 up to 60 we will fight anywhere anytime anyplace" deal....and NOBODY wants none of this kid.

not shane, not cotto, margarito, floyd, none of them.

Williams killed Quintano in the remach, reminds me of Hearns , but like Hearns I think if a fighter got under his reach and took it to him then he would be in trouble. Also, he is young and getting older so naturally he is going to gain weight and it will be hard for him to come in under weight...iono well have to see ...he did beat Margarito and his 'hands of bricks'  ::) ::) ....

How are they going to prove that Margarito did this in previous fights.  It's that whole "it's not what you know it's what you can prove"

they won't. He'll prob get a year off , and that's about it I'm thinking.

after he comes back opposing trainers will make his boxing life miserable by asking for a re-wraps 100% of the time he fights until he retires.

he'll either decline and never beat a top guy ever again in his career or prove everyone wrong and win against top guys.

we shall see.

the surprising thing about williams is he CAN fight inside, roll shoulders, upper cuts short hooks entire 9...it's insane with this guy. Not only that...if he needs to throw 150 punches a round....HE WILL and he doesn't tire and has a nice beard..

His only weakness is he is so offensive he gets caught from time to time with overhand rights...but dude walks right through it.

He was asked about his weight for his size and how long he could do this in an interview online(move up weight classes like he has then back down) he said right now as he trains he seems to lose weight actually and this is why he and his team can get away with training and being ready for anybody in those classes

plus he said he has to do whatever he has to do simply to get a fight and get paid and it's a shame actually.

I'm sure in 3 yrs he'll settle down but I'm afraid this guy won't get his mega fights until it's too late, when he's a little older and can't sustain his workout put b/c he's trying to move up down while older
