McConnell: GOP Must Better Explain Core Values

Thursday, January 29, 2009 5:52 PM

WASHINGTON – After crushing defeats in back-to-back elections, the top Senate Republican warned Thursday that the GOP risks remaining out of power in the White House and Congress unless it better explains its core principles to woo one-time faithful and new loyalists.

"The results of the two recent elections are real, and so are the obstacles we face as a party," Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told the Republican National Committee on Thursday. "My concern is that unless we do something to adapt, our status as a minority party may become too pronounced for an easy recovery."

"The situation is challenging, but it's far from irreversible," McConnell added, a dash of optimism in an otherwise stark assessment of where the Republican Party went wrong as he provided a road map for how it can right itself.

He spoke to Republicans gathered in Washington to choose the next national chairman; five candidates are trying to unseat former President George W. Bush's hand-picked RNC chairman, Mike Duncan of Kentucky. The vote is Friday.

Implicit in McConnell's message was the concern that the Republican Party under Bush strayed from its beliefs, resulting in drubbings in two straight elections.

While McConnell praised Bush as a man of principle, he said: "We can all agree, sad as it is, that he wasn't winning any popularity contests. And history shows that unpopular presidents are usually a drag on everybody else who wears their political label."

McConnell called for the GOP to embrace its conservative principles — and resist diluting its message — to bring people back and attract new rank-and-file. Still, he added: "It's clear our message isn't getting out to nearly as many people as it should ... Too often we've let others define us. And the image they've painted isn't very pretty."

He acknowledged GOP fears that certain demographics from certain regions have shunned the party. And, he warned: "In politics, there's a name for a regional party: it's called a minority party."

Just eight years after Republicans controlled the White House and Congress, the GOP finds itself out of power and trying to figure out how to rebound while its foe has grown much stronger. The Democratic Party is empowered by a broadened coalition of voters — including Hispanics and young voters — who swung behind President Barack Obama's call for change.

Wrong - GOP needs to get rid of all RINO's and get young entrprenours, small business people, and regular people to run for office.

Get rid of McLame in the primary.

We also need to embrace libertarianism and explain how freedom trumpts slavery like the Deomcrats are asking everyone to accept.

Until republicans
   1) Demand a leader with something more than spunk and a nice wink
   2) Decide to stop spending, and stop giving tax cuts to the top 2%
   3) Decide nationbuilding is for the UN, not us
   4) Decide that there are a lot of poor people who need help, and it's time to help them
   5) Decide to run on a platform that deals with relevant issues, not "He's palling with terrorists"
   6) Decide that ignoring the law, avoiding supoenas, and laughing at constitution isn't cool

.... well, there are a lot of 2000 and 2004 republican voters like myself who will tell them to piss off.

GOP, seriously, needs to dump the right wing loonie "gun and god Christians who think the world hates them for their freedoms and no one in the family ever left the USA" and get back to real conservatism.

Like all the Palin talking points people made here - vote for someone as they have a retarded kid and a pregnant teenager whose having a baby? People were seriously saying that was such a plus. How about someone like Romney with all his financial success in various ways - now those are talking points.

Like it or not, the USA is getting more non-white each day, homosexuality is getting more acceptable as time goes by - so sticking with the bible thumping crowd is driving people away. Get off that hypocritical crap, get rid of the fringe racist supporters and get back to the core - small gov, low tax and staying out of ppl's lives. That is what many will support.

I live in a one party state and there is ZERO chance I could ever win an election here.  I would be labled as an extremist.

I think the GOP needs to get away from the social issues and frame in the way that the issue is the government making decisions versus people having the individual right to make choices.

I also believe that tax issues need to be framed as economic liberty in the same way that other issues are classified as civil liberties.  To me there is no freedom in having civil liberties if you have no economic freedoms.

The GOP is terrible at marketing issues.

For example, there was a discussion a few years about censoring the internet.

The usual chorus of Nanny staters showed up about this and that and porn, etc etc.  I simply asked if they preferred Bill Clinton or Newt Gingrich to be the one to decide which materials were appropriate for their viewing.

CASE CLOSED.

Same with gun control.

The public has become afraid of what to do with themselves if there isnt someone else making all the decisions for them.
