Republicans Want GOP to Be Like Palin: Poll

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 10:40 AM

By: Jim Meyers

A majority of Republican voters think Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the best future model for the party, a new Rasmussen poll reveals.

While 55 percent of Republicans polled say the GOP should become more like Palin, only 24 percent believe John McCain is the best future model for the party, 11 percent say former President George W. Bush is the best model, and the remainder are not sure.

The poll also disclosed that 43 percent of Republican voters believe their party has been too moderate over the past eight years, 17 percent think the GOP has been too conservative, and 30 percent say its actions and positions have been about right, with the remainder not sure.

Nearly two-third of Democrats, on the other hand, believe the Republican Party has been too conservative, 42 percent said it should look to McCain for the future, and only 12 percent see Palin as the role model for the future, according to Rasmussen.

Among voters not affiliated with either party, 39 percent say the GOP has been too conservative over the past eight years, 34 percent think it’s been too moderate, and 14 percent believe the party’s actions and positions have been about right.

Overall, 52 percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of Palin, and 26 percent have very unfavorable opinion.

Some polls and pundits also see Gov. Palin out front for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Discussing the 2012 G.O.P. race at breakfast meeting on Monday, former Speaker Newt Gingrich called the Alaska governor "very formidable" and noted that she'd have "a substantial advantage in Iowa," The New York Observer reports.

For a recent Gallup Poll, respondents were asked who, out of 10 candidates, they would like to see run for president in 2012.

Running first was the party's 2008 vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, with 67 percent wanting her to run.

The best model for the repubs??  I'm not sure about that.  But definately a leader
I still have my qualms about a woman being president.

McCain...no
Bush...which one.  By that I mean the conservative 43 started out to be, or the moderate he turned into.
Gingrich...Yes.

Newt in 2012....let the country decide our best solution.

"While 55 percent of Republicans polled say the GOP should become more like Palin"

That means nearly HALF of repubs dislike a vibrant, pretty, energetic person who fits the ideals of the party.

I think it's her competence.  Her beliefs and positions are pretty close to Newt's... I never really disagreed with palin much on the issues.  I just thought she was plumb incompetent to run with the nuclear football.  Mccain, newt, Jeb, even dubya, were capable with this responsibility.  palin was easily manipulated - whether it was campaign handlers "making" her go on Couric again, or mumbling an agreement with prank call DJs on how good her porno movie was.  She agreed to something she didn't understand.  if she'll do it on a prank call, she'll CERTAINLY do it when 10 men with stripes "insist" that bombing so-and-so is the only option.

Newt.  Steele.  Perry from TX too.  I think he'd be a very solid 2012 pick, great positions, and very experienced with the tx gov job.

Newt would utterly humiliate Obama in a debate.

Correct.  No doubt at all there.

I have to wonder though... if obama is doing half-okay, and the economy is stable, if they don't run a scrub candidate out of respect (like Dole or mccain), as they know re-election is likely.  Jindal has already said 2012 not an option for him.

I could not have said it better myself.
He would definately make him look like a 6 year old child.

I'd sell my mother to get a front row seat for that debate!  (kiddin')

Too bad it will never happen

Newton is poison and couldn't run for anything even if he wanted to

I still have my qualms about a woman being president.

And that is just simple sexism, nothing more.

If you don't like her on her basis [I don't] fine, but gender doesn't disqualify her or any other females.

Nope, it's not sexism.  Despite what you think.

My reasons for a woman not being the president are a little more complex than simple sexism arguements.

Besides, I never said she couldn't be or that I wouldn't vote for her.

So normal, few people admit to being a racist or sexist - while making sexist and racist remarks.

Of course that was a sexist remark, embarassing to say otherwise.

This comment coming from someone who broadcasts "Team Ron Paul muscle center!" and I'm the moron.  Okay.
Awesome dude!

Why do you feel sorry for me?  I didn't know you cared about me so much.  I didn't think you even liked me.
I'm honored.

Hmmmm, I didn't know you knew me so well.

Apparently, you took my comment differently than I implied and I can't change that; your mind is made up.
And I certainly won't lose any sleep wondering what anyone thinks of me.

If it's easy for you to label me a certain way without knowing me, that's your problem.  A man says something you don't like about women and they're a sexist?

Now who's being sexist?

Dear god, I really wish more people here could engage in rational debate and not just want to flame.

When someone says "I still have my qualms about a woman being president" that is sexism.

If one said "that" woman - cool. I personally dont think she should be prez either, I cant stand her really.

Silly to debate if its sexism, it is, but as normal people dont admit it.

Doesnt matter anyway, females continue to rise up and will continue to irregardless of sexist elements.

You're so right.  Rational debate is so rare on this board.

Of course that comment is sexist.   It's just funny/sad that it's obvious to everyone except the person making the comment.

Palin is the future... !!!

I have said this all along.  Doesn't the future just look so bright now?  For the Dems that is.
