« on: February 03, 2009, 03:46:11 PM »
Wall-to-wall sales pitch: Obama will sit down Tuesday with anchors from all five TV networks -- ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX and NBC – to rally public support for his stimulus plan. The tag-team session kicks off about 3:30 p.m., and everyone gets 10 minutes apiece.

"Stimulus plan" my aunt fanny.  It's a freakin spending free-for-all.

It might be interesting to hear his sales pitch if I can stand to sit through it without changing the channel.

Did you know that the republicans have agreed with over 98 percent of this bill?

They're complaining about some pork.  But they agree with the majority of it.

That may or may not be true but it's still a freakin spending free-for-all.  Over 98% of politicians are also dumbasses, albeit dumbasses of varying and diverse ilks...  so, go figure.

congressional repubs compiled a list of all the stuff they didn't want in this bill:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/02/gop.stimulus.worries/index.html

They said it totaled $13 billion or so.  (I didn't calculate, they did, but you can see the numbers all listed there.  Less than 2% of the total.  They collectively support the rest.

Read it.  They made their list of what they disliked.  Soooo if Repubs got their way 100%, Obama would STILL be spending 980+ Billion (AND some tax cuts, which would raise the total higher than obama's was).

Guys, both sides of congress support 98% of this this bill.

Repubs don't really give a shit about running anything or fixing anything or even the citizens of this country

They are a aware that the US Govt is a giant tit and they want their milk

That's pretty much about it

That's why their tax cuts don't actually help anyone except themselves

btw - when I say Repubs I don't mean the Republican leaning people on this board.

I'm talking about the goals and objectives of the Republican Party.

As usual 240, you take some facts and then draw some often strange inferences and come up with your own "unique" spin on things.

Congressional Republican leaders deemed the following list "wasteful provisions."  That's not necessarily saying that they fully support the remaining 98% or whatever it adds up to.  That's just saying that they explicitly disagree with the following items.  It's also not saying that 100% of all of the Republicans in Congress agree with that assessment made by party leaders.  Learn to read critically.  Anything more or less than that is you reading things into it that aren't there.

Quote
(CNN) -- On Monday, Congressional Republican leaders put out a list of what they call wasteful provisions in the Senate version of the nearly $900 billion stimulus bill that is being debated:

• $2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.

• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.

• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.

• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.

• $400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD's.

• $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

• $125 million for the Washington sewer system.

• $150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.

• $1 billion for the 2010 Census, which has a projected cost overrun of $3 billion.

• $75 million for "smoking cessation activities."

• $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.

• $75 million for salaries of employees at the FBI.

• $25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.

• $500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.

• $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.

• $6 billion to turn federal buildings into "green" buildings.

• $500 million for state and local fire stations.

• $650 million for wildland fire management on forest service lands.

• $1.2 billion for "youth activities," including youth summer job programs.

• $88 million for renovating the headquarters of the Public Health Service.

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property.

• $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.

• $160 million for "paid volunteers" at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

• $5.5 million for "energy efficiency initiatives" at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

• $850 million for Amtrak.

• $100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.

• $75 million to construct a "security training" facility for State Department Security officers when they can be trained at existing facilities of other agencies.

• $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.

• $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations.

I can see a lot of jobs created from stuff on this list

Not jobs I'd want but still jobs

How do you think all this money is going to be spent

example

- $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

- $125 million for the Washington sewer system.

Oh I see

You're thinking that Obama will just throw the money away like Bush did

I don't think that will happen

I think he might be bumping up against some of his ideals and it will be interesting to see how he reacts

I like him about a million times better than Bush

Bush shares the same worldview as the guys on Wall Street and all the banks that we (YOU and I) have bailed out

I think Obama is fundamentally different from that type of person

the ONLY Repub plan is tax cuts and that hasn't been proven to do anything except make rich people a little bit more rich
