Hey all,

Is Cream of Wheat a good form of carbs first thing in the morning, Oatmeal gets old after years of eating it every day?

I always end up using CoW for my morning carb when I am contest prepping.  My trainer switches me from oats to CoW about 4-6 weeks out... not entirely sure why, as I didn't ask, but I assume that it's more quick to absorb, so it's good for post-cardio AM carbs.

It doesn't taste that great...reminds me of gruel.   :P

It's a good possibility that I'll do Nationals again this November but I'm not fully decided yet.

CoW IS much better with cinnamon and spleda or equal in it.  :)

I'm not sure how it's made, but obviously it's some form of wheat.  Judging by the lack of fiber, I'd assume ( :o) it's not the whole grain which would explain the the "quick to absorb" assumption and probably a much higher GI.

Now with that visual, no one will be rushing out to try it.  :-X

You sure you're not thinking of Malto Meal?  :-X (wtf is that stuff anyway?)

cream of wheat has a lot of iron in it.  Love it.  I would make a bowl and then add 1 teaspoon (4 grams ) sugar to it and it would taste great.

It always made me hold water in the ankles. Sweet potatoes are a good source of complex carbs. No water retention there!

That also explains why my blood sugar would crash SO badly after breakfast that I was blinded by hunger to the point of thinking I was going to die.   :-\

I switch to cream of wheat every now and then.  Like you said, oatmeal gets old after a while.  To switch things up as far as oatmeal...pour out a serving of oats in a bowl, then get the low-sugar quaker oats packets and mix that in with the regular stuff.  It adds a little taste without all of the sugar.
Speaking of Cream of Wheat...is Malt-O-Meal the same thing???  I use to eat that too...add some sugar and some butter, good stuff.

I recommend cream of rye is you want a fantastic carb with a very low GI to start the morning with.

I too, get tired of standard rolled oats so I often switch to steel cut oats.  They have an entirely different texture and a slightly different taste, but retain the low GI impact.

Actually, steel cut is a lower GI than regular rolled due to less processing, taking longer to digest.
I like to take whole oat groat and cook that (very long cooking) and cook steel cut and mix those together and then add some rolled, continuing to cook until they're all done.  Add a little vanilla to the whole pot and then freeze in individual serving sizes.  Turns out to be a nice blend of textures and taste.  Quick and easy to defrost and heat in the micro in the morning.
