Troubled automaker reducing worldwide salaried staff by 14%, with a third of layoffs coming in U.S.; remaining workers to have their pay cut for 2009.


 General Motors announced Tuesday it is cutting 10,000 workers, or 14% of its salaried jobs worldwide. A third of those job losses will be in the United States.

The troubled automaker also said it will cut the pay for its remaining U.S. salaried staff..

Sad.  This could have been avoided by and large, but the unions and politicians screwed up as usual.

Of course they are, but the work rules, union demands, and new rules placed by Obama re: MPG is destroying these companies.

SUVS are what makes these companies money, not go carts. 

By increasing the MPG standards and demonizing SUV's you are puting GM and Ford out of business since their best vehicles are trucks and SUVS. 

Additionally, the Union work rules are so prohibitive that they cant be agile in dealing with downturns like this.

Hey moron, it is based on what they perceive to be the sales going forward, not backwards. 

With the new mandates ZERO imposed on them, it will be impossible to sell as many SUVS and trucks. 

Hence, the orders will be much less going forward and they have to lay people off because they know there will be no demand.

I did not say that.  Businesses make decisions on the future projections, not the past. 

If GM felt that things were going to get better in the future and would be selling more cars, they would keep these people in order to meet the demand.

They know things are not going to improve any time soon under Obama once he lets his EPA guy run wild and impose even stricter rules.
