what i meant was to work towards being able to chin.

do a underhand grip on a bar and very simlar movement
no i fully understood what u meant.......the best way to work towards being able to chin is negative or assisted reps.....pull downs of any form aren't a good indicator or way to work towards it.....when i first started training exclusively with bw exercises a few years ago  i could deadlift ,row and pull down all kinds of decent weight but i couldn't do a single pull up  ...... now i have no idea how much i could lift in those exercises but i can do 35-40 pull ups with no problem in a set

a pull up is a chin.

my mate trains his clients who cant chin by adding a plate on pulldown machine each workout. EVERYONE can chin once they work up to near their bodyweight and rep it easy enough

i have seen people who cant chin work to full chins by doing lat pulldown with close underhand grip.

to say its not the case is absurd

i'm not saying its not possible  its just not optimal  it would take way less time to work up to chins by just doing assisted chins or negatives

It's impossible to compare considering all the cheating going on with chins.  I see guys doing what's called kip ups where just jerk your entire body up to create upward momentum calling it a pullup.  Others cheat by not going all the way up and not going to a dead hang.

I'll answer like this.  17 real pullups with an over hand grip.  With an under hand 20.  Doing kip ups and not getting a full range of motion way over 20.

Personal best was 51 at 183lbs. Currently 35-40 depending on my body that day.

None of that half rep stuff. All the way down, all the way up.

Heres a chance for you all to prove it! We're having a contest on the PL/Strongman Board to see which Getbigger can do the most pullups. Have a look.

I wouldn't go that far....it's a matter of working up top them. Besides, you're a big dude right? I'm hovering around 200lbs.

Wow, I've always been able to do the "hold wrist with one hand, bar the other" one hand pull-up but never thought I was strong enough for the mechanics to do that. I need to try that now.

That was only for 5 though... Where is the x 8 ;D

If anyone could do one arm chins by 8 they'd damn sure be posting a video of it.
