Perhaps this is a metaphor; do not bring it down to the most basic visual level.

Perhaps we the posters are placed in the role of operating the air pump. Getbig the forum is represented by the cops belly. The cop himself is the role of order and moderator (thread started by a mod).

We the users are putting posts (hot air) into the forum that in reality are just fluff. The forum must take it and the mods are left to deal w/ how to get rid of it while we point at the obscene act we have done and stand aside. hmmmm
