Guardsmen to conduct urban training at Arcadia in April
« on: February 20, 2009, 06:32:03 PM »
Can anyone verify this?

The Carroll National Guard unit will train on urban military operations by holding a four-day exercise at Arcadia.

The purpose of the April 2-5 drill will be to gather intelligence, then search for and apprehend a suspected weapons dealer, according to Sgt. Mike Kots, readiness NCO for Alpha Company.

Citizens, law enforcement, media and other supporters will participate.

Troops will spend Thursday, April 2, staging at a forward operations base at Carroll. The next day company leaders will conduct reconnaissance and begin patrolling the streets of Arcadia to identify possible locations of the weapons dealer.

The primary phase will be done Saturday, April 4, when convoys will be deployed from Carroll to Arcadia. Pictures of the arms dealer will be shown in Arcadia, and soldiers will go door to door asking if residents have seen the suspect.

Soldiers will knock only at households that have agreed to participate in the drill, Kots noted.

"Once credible intelligence has been gathered," said Kots, "portions of the town will be road-blocked and more in-depth searches of homes and vehicles will be conducted in accordance with the residents' wishes.

"One of the techniques we use in today's political environment is cordon and knock," Kots explained. "We ask for the head of the household, get permission to search, then have them open doors and cupboards. The homeowner maintains control. We peer over their shoulder, and the soldier uses the homeowner's body language and position to protect him."

During this phase of the operation, troops will interact with residents and media while implementing crowd-control measures and possibly treating and evacuating injured persons.

The unit will use a Blackhawk helicopter for overhead command and control, and to simulate medevacs.

The drill will culminate in the apprehension of the suspected arms dealer.

Alpha Company will conduct a review of the drill on Sunday, April 5.

A meeting to give residents more information and accept volunteers will be held 7 p.m. Monday, March 2, in the Arcadia American Legion hall.

Kots said the exercise will replace Alpha Company's weekend drill for April.

"We have a lot of extended drills this coming year," he added.

In addition to surveillance, searching and apprehension, the exercise will also give the troops valuable experience in stability, support, patrol, traffic control, vehicle searches and other skills needed for deployment in an urban environment.

"This exercise will improve the real-life operational skills of the unit," said Kots. "And it will hopefully improve the public's understanding of military operations."

The pre-drill work with residents is as important at the drill itself.

"It will be important for us to gain the trust and confidence of the residents of Arcadia," said Kots. "We will need to identify individuals that are willing to assist us in training by allowing us to search their homes and vehicles and to participate in role-playing."

"We really want to get as much information out there as possible, because this operation could be pretty intrusive to the people of Arcadia."

I need waaay more then that but the Marines do this alot, and have done so for years. We did it in Manchester NH, back in the 90's. The Green Berets do their final exercise during selection, in public or in areas with civi's. Delta also does the same thing.

Did any training involve going door to door looking for "weapons dealers"?

If u look at the article it sort of mentions that they will work with the locals and most likely hide stuff etc. They might get a volunteer to be the guy they're looking for. They aren't just rolling up and conducting this crap.

How tuff is it to become a Green Beret?  They've always interested the hell out of me.

Could you have made it?  ???

It's both a gut check and a thinking/psycological course that lasts 6 months. I'm Ranger qualified but not jump qualified..making me a leg Ranger. I would have had to jump as a Green Beret and I'm not in anyway a huge fan of that. I hated Ranger school but had been through several other schools with the Army and Marines that made it somewhat easier despite the lack of food. Green Beret training is very demending but it goes beyond just physical so I'm not sure. I've done most of the Cold Weather/Mountain training that both the Army and Marines have but the only school I have ever really wanted was Dive school down in Key West...its an asskicker beyond belief.

Hardcore.

HH6 why do they need Ranger tankers?

Aren't Rangers typically only infantry?

Dude unless ur tabbed don't even get into this with me...There is a big difference between gutting out Ranger school and serving in a Ranger battalion.....Tankers and all Officer MOS's can get slot's. It depends on money, time..assignment's etc. I was headed to a unit that was part of the 18th Airborne Corps and paid for the school. Guys headed to Germany and the heavy divisions had a harder time but the Army paid...this was back in the mid 90's. its easier now to get the slot as the Army wants as many qualified Officers as possible.

Jumping out of an airplane isn't my thing.....beyond that I never gave selection much thought.

Yup...the thought of being drowned in dive school scares me a hell of alot less then doing a mass tac off the back of a C-130. If I could tell u all the horror stories about guys burning in...u might never even fly again.

As for civi skydiving...i wouldn't do that either but it might be a bit safer. The guys who go through both Airborne and Jumpmaster are extremely well trained but...wind...weather...2 00 dudes jumping with u...equipment etc. To much shit can go wrong. One guy takes ur wind with to little room to re-inflate and ur done.

thats one of the reasons i dread going testing for  the military

i do NOT want to be thrown in to the atlantic...i can swim in pools but i have a phobia about huge bodies of water. Love sailing sure but don't throw me in there

Thats at dive school...and they drown u in a pool...ur final eval is night navigation to a point on the beach. U get dropped about a mile off shore and have to use ur compass underwater, no surfacing, and head straight to it. U can swim to within a few feet of the beach and then swim to ur point either. If u went into the service all u'd have to do is the pool and its very easy. Its not drown proofing as mentioned above.

doesn't the navy have some sort of testing in huge bodies of water, not in pools?

As long as I don't have to jump out of a plane. Its actually much easier to do what u have to on the bottom of the pool then struggling to stay afloat. Sink..breath..jump up and get more air...sink. As long as u can take it mentally and believe the divers will come get u if u black-out, then ur good to go. Once they revive u, back into the pool. I won't get to find out as there isn't much call for 34 year old dive qualed tankers.

2nd....thats Seals and I'm sure the Army does as well but I was talking about the initial testing. All basic training courses involving water is done in a pool.
