Very bad advice.  The small mom and pop gyms are not surviving whereever there is any kind of franchised gym or large corporate gym.  Mom and pop gyms just do not get the kind of brand awareness.  Franchise fees can kill you if too high.  But, you can work out fees where they don't hurt you so bad.  Plus, you have the advantage of being able to go to other gyms within the group for either free or reduced price.  Plus, you get a lot better pricing for equipment and gym services when you have a franchise behind you.  Vince, stick with looking like you do and acting the way you do.  you are good at that.  By the way Powerhouse FF are not that high.  Maybe your buddy (i doubt you actually know him) needs to work on local marketing and promotion and spend less on the advertising. 

Mauldin, SC is a small town and the residents could give two shits about the name Gold's or Powerhouse or Planet Fitness.  So having the franchise name is useless.  If it was a bigger city, then it would be beneficial but not in a small town.

True about Mauldin, S.C. being a small town. Andy did not give a damn about advertising and if i remember the other co-owner was really pissed with Andy because he had no people skills and that killed both of their gyms. Andy was willing to work with students and the people that lived in Mauldin, S.C. and he let some of the "bigger guys" train for free. I lived in Pelzer, S.C. and i use to drive all the way to Mauldin, S.C. to train there because it was a great gym and had great equipment. The equipment was not something like Ballys or Lifestyles Family Fitness but who wants that crap. Andy higherd people who knew nothing about bodybuilding, nutrution or proper exercise.

Franchise is a waste of money, I have competed againt them for 20 years and make a good bit of money, I have 3 franchise gyms withing 3 miles of me. Vince is actually right on this.
