Getting in shape cuts down on medical bills and supplements will always be inexpensive enough for people to afford.

I wouldn't say supplements are that inexpensive.  It isn't to far fetched to spend a few hundred a month on them

The small piece of the pie is a much better investment because its minimum risk and minimum investment.

In order for someone to open a gym, they would need to have at least $1,000,000 of available funds just to even think about it...perhaps more.

While you can make a lot more money a month, you can lose a lot more money a month just as well.  The Gold's Gym I trained people at at is no longer there because the owners ran out of money to operate it.  They ended up selling lifetime memberships for 1000.00 dollars right up to the very last day they opened.  I came in as usual and found a bunch of moving vans and all of my training stuff I had in my locker was long gone.

Of course, all of the clients I was training didn't follow me to the next gym because they assumed I had knowledge of it happenning when I didn't.  I was an independent contractor.

That's why I recommend personal trainers to get their own studios because its the wave of the future and they can make more money than they would at a gym along with having their independence and freedom

Having a successful gym is a very small minority and it usually is only successful for a short time...Just ask Bally's

Bally's has been around for 20+ years, I find that far from a short time.  I find it hard to believe that Gold's Gym sold lifetime memberships.  I think that is illegal to do in every state or at least most of them.  And Gold's Gym corporate would not allow them to do that either.  If anyone buys a lifetime membership from any gym they are idiots and deserve to get ripped off.  That is just plain ignorant.  Up until Golds was sold in 1999 it was the most successful gym chain in the world.   Being associated with that brandname has made many many people multi millionaires.  At it's peak the Gold's Gym name generated over a billion dollars worldwide a year.  The problem with having a small independent is that they cannot compete with brand awareness and they cannot compete with what a larger gym can offer.  The one problem that most of the larger clubs have is that do not provide a small area designated for people who don't want the crowds.  The small gym cannot offer near the amount of services or amenities a larger club can.  It is a fact (majority) that smaller independant gyms do not survive the arrival of a mega club.  Sooner or later they will fold or sellout to the bigger club.  Anyway, we ca argue and debate forever.  I m tired now so I am done.

Maybe Coach will go to NC for Melvin's contest,  if Melvin wins him and Joe can shower together and listen to Creed.

By the way D&B has his annual earnings at $90,000.  I think you were a little (alot) off.  Nice try though

My god your not very bright..let me type slow..thats his reported income in a mostly cash business, so if hes reporting this much to IRS how much do you think hes really making? Are you sure your a businessman?

I'll go with what is reported by D&B rather than you as would all creditors.  But in reality I could care less.  So he is not claiming all the money he makes to the IRS.  I bet he appreciates you letting everyone know on here about that.  ???  Anyway, I applaud him and he is the greatest personal trainer I have ever seen.  ::) You have won and I have lost.  I bow to your superiority.  You know more than I do about everything.  ::) I feel bad wasting almost 30 years in the business and helping several gyms start and marketing and promoting the largest Gold's Gym in the early 90's that did $1.4 million dollars from their 400 sq. ft. Pro Shop the first year of business alone, and had 13,000 members by year 3.  I hope you accept my apology for doubting you.  ::)  I have no idea why I am debating this but it has been fun.

Both of the gyms i visit have cut back on PT staff significantly.  They either get lopped down to 5 hours a week and "encouraged" to work part-time elsewhere, or they just get taken off the schedule for a while.

Those who contract independently and work in gyms... I just don't see them anymore.

maybe things are still pumping where you live.  in SW FL, it's quite terrible for PTs right now.

Believe it Keith..it happenned and there were a number of people upset at me although I didn't have anything to do with it.

And no-one deserves to get ripped off and they aren't ignorant because of that.  They trusted the owners and the name Gold's Gym and no reason to think otherwise.

And in any event,a lot of personal trainers want their independence from the gym AND lots of people are tired of the large, unfriendly chain gyms because they continue not to get into shape.

Most people use their memberships for a few days and then never come back to the gym ever and that happens just about everywhere.  The gym is making money but people aren't getting results

People can say all they want about my ideas being stupid but I know better.  The era of gyms isn't ending however the era of the PT Studio/Wellness Centers is beginning and I'm sorry if you don't recognize the industry trend.

I actually intend on opening my own studio once I complete my Massage Therapy License at Southwestern College (Sorry Basile, I actually do go to College) .  I won't have to worry about commerical equipment because I sell it and the money I make from my online websites will provide the funding nessesary to get everything running.  I won't need any bank loan whatsoever to get things going.

BTW, try calling this a hole in the wall.  Perl Personal Training Studio

This place is a gym's worst nightmare.  You can't possibly not be impressed by this.  That's the advantage of being independent and free from franchises...you can establish your own legacy, make your own rules, and do what you want in a gym and this place is very personalized and stylish.

I couldn't work out there.  There's no squat rack, lack of benches, and I'd be worried about putting dents in that nice floor.   :-\

Finally, some reality in this thread. As I said, earlier, in a recession an ultra-descretionary expense like a trainer will be the first thing to go. The next trend isn't big gyms or Wellness centers, it's people going to the park, running, bicycling and doing a few pushups and situps.

Vince, it's not too late to fill out an application with UPS or Fedex.

Somehow I doubt people with discretionary income want to work out in a trailer.

There are so many treadmill, pilates, Body Pump, etc.. classes going on, it's a surprise people aren't trying to open minimalist gyms. Most guys would love to go to a $20-25/month gym with weights only. Hard part is finding a cheap enough space that isn't so far off the the beaten path. One of the problems is that commercial real estate tends to be the last thing to crack when the economy goes south. Also, a lot of people would rather have the tax write-off than take less money especially considering many of the costs are fixed.

At least Melvin Goodrum has won a trophy in a bodybuilding contest. How many here can claim that? Goatboy? Naw, that dude is probably in timeout where he belongs.

I mean honestly, what the f*ck is this?? Did you even somewhat diet or even train? Or did you just go there & show up? And Vince,so what he's got a trophy or 2. When there is only 2 in your class it's kinda hard NOT to get a trophy.

Good post. Where I live, there are a lot of stores that have been vacant for close to a year.

It's a common misconception that every empty retail/warehouse space is losing money. Upkeep, plowing, landscaping, insurance, legal fees, etc... can really eat away at square foot costs. Some of those costs go down or away when a space is unoccupied, especially if the owner doesn't have a mortgage that needs factoring into overhead. Let's not even talk about pain in the ass tenants or costs associated with people who need a space built to suit.

An empty space could actually make money depending upon what a person's overall tax situation.

Ya its hard to sell a pro shop in Hawaii, a monkey could do that and wasnt that Bob Berda who did that?

I don't know who that is.  Odd Haugen owned the gym and I can't remember the guy who ran the Pro Shop but that wasn't the name.  I was the Promotions and Marketing director there when it first opened and help setup the equipment.  And if a monkey could do it then why when 24 Hour Fitness took over the exact location, the sales dipped below $250,000 for the year from the Pro Shop.  And in fact the location on Kalakaua in Waikiki of 24 Hour Fitness continued to sell Gold's Gym products when the took over that location.  I video taped the Pro Shop employee telling me that if they didn't have Gold's Gym shirts in there they wouldn't sell anything.  Plus, since it is so easy to sell in Hawaii as you say and the smaller gyms are so much better.  How do you explain why the smaller gyms don't do at least $100,000 a year from their pro shop and have 4,000+ members.  There were quite a few smaller hole in the wall gyms there.  Not now cause they were put under by 24 Hour Fitness (what's with that?).  This is a dumb debate cause it is a little different in each market.  But as a whole, smaller gyms do not make it.  That is a fact.  I do know the Wellness Centers are fast becoming popular.  But, larger gyms that start providing this service will kill every smaller location and independant.

I moved to Vegas from Hawaii to open a chain of clubs.  I had the financial backing and I spent over one year putting together a solid business plan that got me the best of the best helping me and going to manage the club.  The current piece of shit economy has set everything back for I have no idea how long.  But, the one thing I do is research and make sure everything is put together right.  I must have done a pretty good job cause I had some very well known and respected people wanting to be involved.  These are people who have been involved with some very very big projects.  So, no matter what I may look like now I still know this industry and have the contacts to do things.

Yep, right across from Bilo and McDonalds.  They used to have a great restaurant next to it called Locos.  They had the best steaks around.  I'd usually go there during breaks
