Melvin showed up at the Olympia to take on Billy Guns. The guy was fair dinkum. My mate Onlyme was there at the Olympia in Vegas but failed to take in that famous showdown. Had he done so and used his famous fart machine that would have been one hell of a laugh. Why someone would prefer the Olympia or the stalls to seeing Goodrum on a table is beyond me. I would have recorded that showdown plus interviewed Goodrum for Getbig. We don't find many internet heroes like Melvin any more.

Its called entertainment.  I came there because I was PAID to come there.  It was nothing more than a publicity stunt and it worked.

As far as Keith not attending...well there was no lifting crane available to haul his ass over.

Who paid you and why would you two posing make for a publicity stunt?

MD paid for that debacle.  This should explain everything.

Gyms do have a problem. What has happened is that gyms have become larger over the years because they are offering more services. They also open earlier and on weekends. The larger gyms are much more expensive to operate. Some clubs pay over $1,000,000/year for rent. That is $20,000/week. A large gyms pay about $1,000/day rent. Where is the money going to come from for that and other expenses? That is why contracts saved clubs.

What also evolved was the separation of services and memberships. It was just too expensive to offer instruction all the time or even part of the time. Clubs could then compete for cheap memberships and sign up heaps of people. They made extra money through expensive services like personal training and nutrition programs. This division made it cheaper for regular members who knew what they were doing and didn't buy extra services. Thus, we find that Virginactive operates the same way. They are unusual because in the past no one could join a quality club without signing up for a long time. This pay-as-you- go-and-you-can-stop-anytime is a brave model for sure. It is very user friendly and that accounts for the popularity we are seeing. Whether success lasts in quite another thing.

What we are finding in the gym industry is that it is getting cut up into smaller pieces with lots of clubs competing for memberships. How things change. We are seeing the phenomenon of the small personal training studio trying to capitalise on providing better levels of instruction and personal attention. This is not a cheap alternative so will remain a niche operation. I doubt such a studio will be successful in small country towns where incomes are low. The fact remains that successful clubs usually locate in middle class suburbs or shopping centres or downtown premises. Parking is always a problem and that is why the suburban shopping centre is attractive for gyms and fitness centres. I don't think I have ever seen a purpose built commercial gym in Australia. Sometimes we find large buildings converted to clubs. The Castle Hill RSL did build such a free-standing facility but it is adjacent to the existing premises.

The point for Melvin Goodrum to note is that he cannot set up a decent gym in a small office. Small operators look for cheap warehouse or factory buildings to locate in. These premises are suitable because there is parking when other businesses close and gyms are at their peak. Even these mid-size operations are expensive to set up and operate. This business is not for the meek.....or reckless.

Maybe Melvin can outline his business plan so we can see what his operation is all about?

That wasn't a check, it was a $200 gift certificate for ALR products.  I wasn't paid by ALR

I just got an idea while taking a shit (for some reason Goodrum always is on my mind when I am doing that).  It is obvious that he enters shows with as few entrants as possible hoping to be the only one in his class.  As soon as he finds out there is more than 1 he either quits or makes up some excuse (like when he fell going UP the stairs ::))  Anyway, vince just pay the promoter to make sure no one else enters your class and you will win first.  Or just enter a contest and make sure other competitors know you are entering because in reality NO one wants to be on the same stage as you so if they knew ahead of time you are entering good chance is they won't enter.  I hope this helps.  And I posted this mostly because this thread needs to be near the top always.

Well, Melvin Goodrum claims he looks like Munzer and other cut up dudes. No one else is so delusional. That is why Goodrum is an entertainer.

Yes he does and he is better than you.  So maybe we should stick together.  Remember you are just another internet half-wit like Goodrum so you should try and keep as many allies as you can.

We have been waiting for a transformed Goodrum for years now. Every year Melvin starts the hype about how great he will be THIS year. The amusing thing is he looks more or less the same each time. His condition for the Billy Guns showdown was lamentable. Who in their right mind, entertainment aside, would mount a table and pose in trunks for all to laugh at looking like Goodrum did? That takes a special dude. A nincompoop! A buffoon! An internet legend, even. Until Melvin can show us a muscular physique with cuts he is nothing but a pompous wannabe. He still can't enter an open contest, for goodness sake! He does a few pushups at home and looks in the mirror and is amazed at what he sees. Yeah, traps, biceps and calves are fine but where are his abs? That is the mystery. It doesn't help to attack Melvin's scoffers.

19 pages ragging on Vince and he is probably just laughing at you all. He looks like shit, but at least he stepped on to a stage. The same old pictures that was funny two years ago coupled with the same old remarks that was funny three years ago, are fast getting old. If you really find him that laughable, the best thing to do would be to ignore him completely. He won't be able to handle that. He knows full well when he made this thread the insults it would cause. As the old saying goes, say what you want about me, just get my name right. It keeps people talking. This Vince Basile gramps, or whoever he is, should really give it a rest. You actually put effort into insulting a guy online? I wonder if it's more sad Goodrum stepping on to a stage in that laughable condition or Basile typing pages and pages on nonsense. To actually put that much effort into insulting Goodrum must mean he is on your minds, exactly where he wants to be. You guys are the fools, wake up.  :-*

I'm sorry but I actually like helping people, not suckering them into contracts and honestly you don't know anything about what's viable in America and what isn't.  I lot of people I've spoken to have stated that they are tired of being signed into contracts and not getting help with equipment unless they pay for personal training services.

They feel that they shouldn't have to pay hundreds of dollars for a personal trainer when they just spent hundreds of dollars getting the membership.  And I agree with them.

Gyms are going to have to change things up eventually and focus more on helping people rather than helping themselves to their wallet
yeah whatever happened to joining a gym and being given a free program? that should be mandatory.

Goodrum is not a bodybuilder's ass. I've seen people who's never set foot in a gym looking better than Vince. However, he DOES compete, not just talk about it. Let's see all your contest pics please. :)

You know whats funny is how you have the balls to say anything.  Who the fuck are you.  You haven't done one thing in your life.  You pop off with nothing to back you up.  Face it boy I am in your mind cause you are weak.  You are one of those guys who try to fit in so hard yet fail.  Say what you want but you are on the same level as Goodrum except he is a step higher cause at least he did get on stage (I give him that credit)  All you have done your whole life is talk with no action.  Guys like you are a dime a dozen.  Keep it coming cause you are hilarious.  Oh yea keep hiding behind the computer it suits you.

I remember when I first competed. It was thought it was a good experience to get up and pose. Well, I don't agree because not placing is never a good experience. Guys like Goodrum don't deserve praise for enterring a Junior contest at 30 years of age. The guy has certificates for personal training and nutrition yet presents like an intermediate guy you see by the millions in gyms all over the world. Sure, I don't discourage anyone from training to improve themselves or get stronger, etc. However, competition is not for everyone and sometimes we see guys in posing trunks who should never be there. It is a bit like listening to awful Karaoke singers who entertain because they are so bad. Goodrum is a borderline bodybuilder. He looks okay in a T-shirt because he has reasonably big arms. Come to think about it, he has some of the longest arms ever seen on a human. That is another story. Guys like Arvilla and Goodrum have discovered that they disappear when they start getting rid of bulk for contests. The once big muscles evaporate and I guess Melvin feared losing too much size so he enterred with perhaps 15% bodyfat. That is never going to impress the judges or spectators. From the painful look on Goodrum's face while posing it is clear he wasn't going too well or perhaps people were laughing in the audience.

Goodrum claims he has abdominals showing in the images seen in this thread. Yes, one and a half rows of abs. That is pre 1960 good enough but not post 2000 condition. Goodrum should know that. All I can say is Melvin is a dreamer or perhaps he really does have poor vision and cannot discern his bodyfat levels clearly. I suppose guys like that listen to friends and mates and get praise instead of accurate assessments. I mean, how many years does this guy have to enter contests before he will gain some acceptance here on Getbig? We all can predict the answer.
