Is your gym being effected by the economy?
« on: February 21, 2009, 05:31:50 PM »
At one of mine they have cut back on staff. The trainers have lost many clients. Classes are cancelled. And the place is pretty much empty  every morning. This is Timesquare NYC I'm talking about. Whats it like where everyone else lives?

I'm noticing the gym is more crowded with many members training more due to layoff status. This depression is for real and the cuts are deep. The Bush admin really f**ked things up. Just this week my company lost 2 senior managers, the director, and even the top maintenance guy. More layoffs are expected. People are very worried. I could care less, I'd welcome the vacation. 20 years straight is enough.

The personal trainers are definately losing clients. I hear them bitch all day.

Mine is getting busier as more people want a less frills trianing experience...not tied down by direct debit or contracts. Pay one month at a time by cash or alternatively pay for a workout at a time

My current gym is cheap, dirt cheap. But two of my previous gyms have called me recently and offered me huge discounts to come back. I am thinking any gym that charges over 40 bucks a month is hurting, in my area anyway.

I met him twice and he was very nice. But I've met Chefs that have worked for him and they said he was a very nasty man.

The attitude of a chef I worked under when I was a kid put me off kitchen life.  That and the insulting pay.  Dude was aways stressed to breaking point.  During service this guy would boil over all the time (no, not just at me  ;)) and it was just inefficient.  Service had to make way for the tantrum.

Even during prep this guy was an ass.  Chinese guy, and he used to come up behind you and slap you on the back of the head and shout, "Chop Fasta!!  Fasta!  Hurry!" then move along and do it to the next guy.  Somebody probably stabbed his ass by now.  ::)  Props for getting through those early years Tim.

I got to a Gold's here in SoCal. It's about as busy as it's ever been. 8:00 on a Friday and tons of people were there. It's not good enough apparently, they're trying to pack even more people in there.

I train at family fitness center in lima ohio.
the owners are a christian couple in their late 70's early 80's.
owned it 20 years or so.
home of world champion masters power lifter chuck lee
still competing in his 80's

no trainers there 1 staff person.
at one time at 5 in the afternoon
the action there was better than any bar near closing time.
today there were maybe 10 people there and that's the most
Ive seen there at one time in months.

I think the owners keep it open for the love of it. sure can't
see how they are making money when my membership is 200 bucks.
all the equipment I could ever ask for.

the ymca in lima is now adding a new line of equipment but the newspaper
made no mention of what other than weight training equipment and 2000 sq ft
area dedicated to the line n some other stuff.

seems the economy is getting along with this part of businesses here.
people at the ford plant may disagree but hey they still have jobs

Sadly, there are new people joining my gym all the time. All idiots too. The staff however, have seen their hours cut back. The dumbest move so far....cutting the custodians/janitors' hours.  ::)

I studied in the Far East quite a few times. Thais were cool. Vietnamese were hesitant. Chinks and Japs were very tough on me. French are the worst. I studied in France many times and had to put up with these winey c#nts. All totally worth it. Hey man. When the puppy pee's on the rug do you give him a scooby snack or smack him on the ass? Tough love is when it really sinks in. Hard work pays off. Dad used to kick my ass as a kid.

Nothing so exotic for me.  I was in a run of the mill chain Italian in Colorado.  I didn't have the perspective at the time but I suspect that the chef was pissed off about having to man the wheel in a place like that and having to spend his days shepherding a bunch of inexperienced kids, and all this after graduating from Cordon Bleu.  I don't think it was tough love so much as a guy really unhappy with his job and probably his money.  Honestly tho, I wouldn't have cut it even with the greatest guy in the world at the helm - the hours, the pay, and dedication required... hard yards.

I'm considering getting back into the game tho, but as a baker rather than a cook.  I'd want to run it tho since taking a job as an employee would be a big pay cut.  The only two hurdles are that I have no experience running a bakery and that I'm not a baker.  But hey, why let that stop me?  ;D

The opposite is true, it attracted more members since January. People realize that they better get their asses in good shape for the economic struggle to come. Survival of the fittest.

they fired half the staff at the gym im employed at as a trainer, thank god they didnt fire me.im on my hands and knees daily wiping down the treadmills, hammer strength equipment ect,im also the only one who oils the machines and keeps them well maintained.the other trainers supposed to alternate with me oiling the machines but they dont care about the equipment cause they train elsewhere.i do feel bad though, they fired the outside cleaning crew who was getting 2500$ a month to keep the gym clean and gave me a raise and i do all the cleaning on top of my personal training :P.but at least i got a job ;Dso i cant complain.my gym was doing really bad 5 months ago but now where making a turn around, thank god,it was so bad back then the owners where thinking of filing bankruptcy

Gracie, glad they kept the guy who actually put in soe effort and did his job.

Gym i train's been in business for 30 years (i've been there for 16) and thankfully it's going stronger than ever. Small staff of maybe 4 or 5.

Another gym close by that only opened up a year or two ago just closed down, so that's brought some old blood back and new blood in.

I train at various BSC locations throughout Boston, and membership has never been higher.  There have been layoffs in Boston, but very few compared to most of the country.

It makes me laugh thinking that I used to pay close to $100.00 bucks a month to train at Crunch in downtown crossing. I liked that gym.
