The bible was written by dozens, perhaps hundreds of people over thousands of years. All of these HUMANS had personal beliefs and biases and opinions and added these to the texts that they composed. To believe that all of the texts (haphazardly put together artificially long after they were all written) don't contain contradictions from other texts in the same book (or in separate books of the bible) is blatantly absurd and naive. If anyone wants to know where all of these contradictions are, just read the first 2 chapters of Genesis for the biggest one. Google "Bible contradictions" and you'll find thousands.

Much of it i do believe.  Especially the good wisdom.

What's interesting is how people can believe every word of it is God's and how they reason that belief.

That's interesting (seriously).  What parts do you believe (in general) and how do you determine what to believe or not?

Usually it if has to do with doctrine or dogma i see as man made.

But things like "As a man thinkith", nuggets of wisdom like that I believe are inspired.

What about the book of Proverbs?  It's my favorite.  I've spent more time in that book than all other parts combined.

Why do you guys care?

YAWN!!!!!

It’s the same old thing we see with Biblical skeptics. Each year, they look for some “bombshell” that supposed to be the thing that finally puts an end to Christianity. 90% of the time, it’s some argument rehashed from the “Enlightenment” period, that has a refutation almost as old.

As for these contradictions, a simple read will show that the lion’s share are anything but that. I'll go over some of the quickies.

For example:

3. How many fighting men were found in Judah?

    * Five hundred thousand (2 Samuel 24:9)
    * Four hundred and seventy thousand (I Chronicles 21:5)

Both numbers 3 and 7 can be summed up in one word: ROUNDING. We do that even today. Take President Obama's stimulus package. Some newscasts report it at $789 billion; others simply state it's $800 billion. By Ally's criteria, that would be a "contradiction". But, few if any would give that any weight. The latter would simply be a rough estimate; the former is a more precise calculation.

10. How many pairs of clean animals did God tell Noah to take into the Ark?

    * Two (Genesis 6:19, 20)
    * Seven (Genesis 7:2). But despite this last instruction only two pairs went into the ark (Genesis 7:8-9)

Mr. Ally needs to read the text again. It says that Noah took seven pairs of clean and two pairs of unclean animals.

30. Who was the father of Uzziah?

    * Joram (Matthew 1:
    * Amaziah (2 Chronicles 26:1)

31. Who was the father of Jechoniah?

    * Josiah (Matthew 1:11)
    * Jeholakim (I Chronicles 3:16)

Both of these fall under "Basic Geneaology 101". Ally, of all people, should know that the term "father" is NOT LIMITED to a simple first-generation male parent. It can refer to any male ancestor. The Jews of Jesus' time called Abraham their "father". Even modern Muslims consider Abraham to be their "father".

A prime example is in Genesis 32:9, And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee . We know from the geneaolgy that Isaac was Jacob's actual father and Abe was his GRANDFATHER. But, since there's no ancient Hebrew word for "grandpa", the word, "Ab" is used.

47. Did Judas kiss Jesus?

    * Yes (Matthew 26:48-50)
    * No. Judas could not get close enough to Jesus to kiss him (John 18:3-12)

Ummm......exactly where in John 18 does it state that Judas could not get to Jesus? It DOESN'T. Therefore, I'd love to where Mr. Ally got the idea that Judas didn't kiss Him as depicted in Matt. 26.

49. Did Jesus bear his own cross?

    * Yes (John 19:17)
    * No (Matthew 27:31-32)

Mr. Ally apparently forgot to check out Luke 23:26, which explains what basically anyone could deduce with a little common sense: Jesus carried the cross to a certain point. Then, after He fell out from exhaustion, the soliders found Simon of Cyrene to bear the cross the remainder of the way, "after Jesus".

50. Did Jesus die before the curtain of the temple was torn?

    * Yes (Matthew 27:50-51; Mark lS:37-38)
    * No. After the curtain was torn, then Jesus crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit! And having said this he breathed his last (Luke 23:45-46)

Matthew 27 said that Jesus died before the curtain was torn. Luke said....WAIT A MINUTE!!!! All Luke mentions is that Jesus said, "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit", and then He died. NOWHERE does Luke indicate that this occurred before or after the curtain being torn.

52. Where was Jesus at the sixth hour on the day of the crucifixion?

    * On the cross (Mark 15:23)
    * In Pilates court (John 19:14)

John was the last of the disciples of the 1st century. John's Gospel, along with his other three books, was written for a Roman audience. The Jews counted time differently from the Roman. In Jewish time, a day is from "the evening and the morning", which is why the Sabbath starts on sundown Friday and ends on sundown Saturday. Romans, however, do the midnight-to-midnight thing, as we use to this day.

Therefore the sixth hour, in Roman time, would be 6:00 A.M., which is consistent with the portion of John 18, that states Jesus was in court early in the morning. So, either Jesus was in Pilate's court for over six hours.....OR the "sixth hour" was "early in the morning" (ala 6:00 A.M.), which is stated in both Gospels (John and Mark).

53. The gospels say that two thieves were crucified along with Jesus. Did both thieves mock Jesus?

    * Yes (Mark 15:32)
    * No. One of them mocked Jesus, the other defended Jesus (Luke 23:43)

There's a reason that the guy in Luke is called the "repentant thief". Both thieves mock Jesus, initially. But, as Jesus is asking forgiveness for the people, ridiculing him, one of them has a change of heart (keep in mind that how long all of them were on their respective crosses).

54. Did Jesus ascend to Paradise the same day of the crucifixion?

    * Yes. He said to the thief who defended him, Today you will be with me in Paradise (Luke 23:43)
    * No. He said to Mary Magdelene two days later, I have not yet ascended to the Father (John 20:17)

???

If Jesus ascended in to Paradise the same day, there would have been NO RESURRECTION, nor would Jesus have been with the disciples for 40 days, after that. Plus, there's the little matter of Jesus' ascension and the fact that the disciples (including Matthias, the guy who replaced Judas) saw Him leave.

So, obviously Jesus did not ascend into Paradise on that day (and neither did the repentant thief).

60. What did Judas do with the blood money he received for betraying Jesus?

    * He bought a field (Acts 1: 18)
    * He threw all of it into the temple and went away. The priests could not put the blood money into the temple treasury, so they used it to buy a field to bury strangers (Matthew 27:5)

Another contradiction that is anything but. The text in Matthew gives the crux of the explanation: The priests couldn't use the blood money...NOR could they use anything bought with blood money. So, when the Field of Blood gets purchased, take a guess as to whose name that field's purchase was credited......JUDAS!!!

Go back to the stimulus package example I used earlier. It's credited to PRESIDENT OBAMA. Did Obama actually write all 1,100 pages of it? NOPE!! The folks in Congress did. By Ally's standards, it would be a "contradiction" to say call it Obama's stimulus and Congress' stimulus, as well. In actuality, it is not. Obama may not have physically penned it; but he allowed Congress to do so on his behalf; he approved it and signed his name to it. So, it's indeed OBAMA's package.

Judas did much the same thing (in a weird way). The priests told him they could not take his money and why they couldn't. By his casting it at the priests' feet, he is effectively giving them permission to do with it what they please on his behalf.

Acts 1:18 states that Judas bought the field with "the wages of iniquity", namely his betrayal of Jesus. In other words, Judas' actions and the money procured from such bought that field. Whether Judas bought it directy or indirectly (the priests doing the purchasing on his behalf) is merely semantics. Does anyone really think that, if the priests were able to legally keep that money, they would have bought an abandoned field to bury dead people?

The rest of these "contradictions" are addressed in the following site, for those that are interested.

Here's another that we usually don't get until Christmas time (and one that's had a few threads done on it)

100. Was baby Jesus life threatened in Jerusalem?

    * Yes, so Joseph fled with him to Egypt and stayed there until Herod died (Matthew 2:13 23)
    * No. The family fled nowhere. They calmly presented the child at the Jerusalem temple according to the Jewish customs and returned to Galilee (Luke 2:21-40)

What Ally is forgetting that the temple thing and the fleeing to Egypt occured about TWO YEARS APART. Jesus was presented to the Temple, when He was about six weeks old, according to Levitical law. When, Herod makes the attempt to kill Jesus, the edict (based on the information Herod got from the wise men) was to kill the boys TWO YEARS and under. That would mean that the wise men found Jesus when He was about two, NOT when he was a newborn baby.

It appears Ally has "Nativity scene" syndrome, as tradition constantly depicts the shepherds and wise men finding Jesus simultaneously or one immediately after the other. Luke indicated that Mary and Joseph went to the temple yearly. So it appears that, on trip number 3, after the birth of Jesus is when the wise men give up the gold, frankencense and myrrh to Him.

PLEASE!!!

How would a rough estimate and a more precise number be a contradiction, Or are you now suggesting  that the folks that used the number of $800 billion to describe the stimulus price tag actually forgot the more precise number of $789 billion, or that they’re “contradicting” themselves (or others) if they don’t use $789 billion every time they make reference to the dollar amount?  ::)

Furthermore, that's hardly the first time such is done in Scripture. The rough estimate for the men who left Egypt, during the Exodus, was "about 600,000", according to Moses. Later in the book of Numbers (as well as in Exodus 37, I think), we get a more precise number of men, 603,550.

That's hardly a contradiction.

How would a rough estimate and a more precise number be a contradiction, unless you're now going to claim that the various newscasters are now contradicting each other, with regards to Obama's stimulus package.

A contradiction is a contradiction.

And there's no such thing, in this number figure.

Is God perfect or not?

Whether He's perfect or not has nothing to do with the number issue (I believe He is perfect, for the record).

You mean 400 thousand is no different than 470 thousand?

That's 17.5% different.

You mean you'd have no problem paying 17.5% extra next time you go shopping?  After all the store is just rounding.

Like i said, I didn't know God was a newscaster, so then it's ok for him not to be accurate because he's not contradicting when he's just being inaccurate right?

Is God perfect or not?

You make the erroneous assumption that He doesn't know the exact number (and that Moses didn't know, either).

I recently had to get some major brake work done on my car, the price for which was $695.10. When I called my wife and told her about the situation, I stated that Midas is going to charge me $700 to get the brakes fix. Do you think I forgot what the exact price was? HARDLY!!!

And few are going to accuse me of being contradictory (except for folks like you), simply because I said $700 instead of $695.10. My wife got the point.

Sorry, if this "is" God's word, I don't see it as so trivial that it's ok to be inaccurate.  Maybe the newscasters, but not God.

You should expect better when it comes to everlasting salvation, but if it was about the 6 o'clock news, well then.......... ::)

Yeah, that's what humans do.  They round up.  It's ok for humans to be inaccurate because they are, not perfect.  Further, some more, it's ok for humans to state 2 different figures.  That's what car salesmen do all the time.

Is God a car salesman?

PS, last i checked, Moses was a man.

$700 for brakes?  ouch.  I just spent $500 (491.78  ;)) a month ago.

Also,  your rounding difference was .7% (not even 1% unless of course you round up  ;))   NOT 17.5%  like God's gaffe.
