Byrd: "Obama in power grab"

"Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest-serving Democratic senator, is criticizing President Obama’s appointment of White House “czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to a power grab by the executive branch.

In a letter to Obama on Wednesday, Byrd complained about Obama’s decision to create White House offices on health reform, urban affairs policy, and energy and climate change. Byrd said such positions “can threaten the Constitutional system of checks and balances. At the worst, White House staff have taken direction and control of programmatic areas that are the statutory responsibility of Senate-confirmed officials.”

While it's rare for Byrd to criticize a president in his own party, Byrd is a stern constitutional scholar who has always stood up for the legislative branch in its role in checking the power of the White House. Byrd no longer holds the powerful Appropriations chairmanship, so his criticism does not carry as much weight these days. Byrd repeatedly clashed with the Bush administration over executive power, and it appears that he's not limiting his criticism to Republican administrations.

Byrd also wants Obama to limit claims of executive privilege while also ensuring that the White House czars don’t have authority over Cabinet officers confirmed by the Senate."

From Byrd, no less.

But he's exactly right--I think we've all seen that happening but I just hadn't put it into those exact words, a "power grab," but that's what's happening right under our noses.

Youandme gimmick

I haven't seen 'youandme' around here in some time...  but as I recall he tended more towards the left end of the political spectrum.  I think he was a doctor or a med student or something?  I don't think James = youandme.

Regardless of whether Byrd is a racist or not, the question is legit.

Or actually - it is always a legit question.

Is the current president overreaching the Executive branch?

Is the checks and balance tilted towards the Executive branch?

Well, that probably depends on who you ask - and also in comparison to what president.

In comparison to Bush jr, Obama is still pretty balanced. He's actually getting credit for inviting the congress for open sitdowns.

Compared to LBJ or Carter, he's a more dominant president.

Just looking at the constitution, I would say that the current trend the last 20-30 years have been for the president to become increasingly powerful, and the two other branches to take a back seat due to this.

The real extreme came following 9/11 when Bush/Cheney ran USA like a two man show for well over three years.

But Obama shouldn't be given any free passes - he should be given an honest and true review, keeping him straight.

my biggest thing is the ability of his uber partisan chief of staff to redraw districts that is just plain horrible and should not be allowed.
