You're right that was taken in the 80s I believe he was in his 50s which is still insane

That is exactly my thoughts. I remember seeing it in Rick Waynes 'Muscle Wars' (decent book, by the way) and thinking WTF! but now while it is still impressive it does not have the WOW factor

Nope. Just pulled that outta my ass. Beckles always was reticent with his true age, and played it up, as did the magazines.
