What training do you do for Abs/Obliques?
« on: March 11, 2009, 01:20:02 PM »
Whats your routine for abs and obliques and can you give me some advice/tips for training these bodyparts?

These are my worst bodyparts along with chest (front of my torso is lagging behind rest of body)

I have horrible abs or none at all. I can't figure out yet.
I do crunches in sets of 20-30 reps w/ 70lbs on my chest and also use that ab roller. I do 50 of them total. I can do them standing up now.

Sometimes I look at this picture and laugh myself to tears. Usually gives your abs a good workout.

If you crunch, make every rep count. Better a set of 20 reps slowly than 50 fast ones. Knee raises are "fun" too. Whatever you do for abs, If it don't hurt, it won't work.    :'(

I think its more of a mind muscle connection than anything. Weighted decline situps, breathing squats, etc etc all brings in the abs. Plus maybe dropping the bodyfat will show more of the abs, you may have more muscle there than you realize.

3 sets cable crunches- 30 reps (20 reps for obliques and 10 for abbs)
2 sets medicine ball crunches- 30 reps (same as above)
3 sets of dumbell sidebends- 8 reps for each side

Just treat your abs like any other muscle, perhaps with just a few more reps. And allow proper recovery like you would do with any other muscle. I don't get why people have to over complicate this trivial matter.

I'm sure you already know to do sits up and crunches (everyone does) but many people fail to do Hanging Leg Raises and Knee Raises.  Perform both of these exercises as you would any other.  That is to say at least three sets of ten reps each; do more as needed until you feel the burn.

If your gym has a trunk rotation machine use it; if your gym does not have this machine, you can achieve the same effect by doing a free standing twist with a cable machine.  Again, three sets of ten.  If you can do much more than 10 reps the weight is too light (so increase it).  If you can't do ten the weight is too heavy (lighten it).

Finally, remember it is possible to have strong, muscled abs that are (still) covered in fat.  If inter-abdominal fat is also an issue for you, increase your cardio and be more strict with your diet.

My job- doing ice cream.
LOTS of picking things up, twisting and turning and sometimes having to contort your body in all sorts of odd "shapes" while climbing over pallets in freezers.
That and lifting and walking with my guitar amps, sometimes a few hundred yards (not that often that's performed).
I seem to get all I need from the latter, lots of isometric exercise. Just tensing my core seems to be plenty.

Same thing. It's slower, but still do it.
I'm paid for 8hrs, no matter how fast I get done. I'm the king of stocking stores in 2.5-3hrs and going home while still getting paid for 8. My fastest time is 1hr 28min for the full day.
I also get OT should I be in the middle of summer, or someone didn't do their job properly the day before.
I also drive a Class A truck, so they have me doing that. Sometimes I drive the truck, drop off the product, work it to the shelf, and then repeat. Depending on the area I will do this at 3 stores, after doing 8 others, and still beat the other drivers in.
So, it's slower, but I'm still paid my 40hrs or more.

For abs mostly weighted planks. For obliques used to do sidebends but now when I do one arm push presses and jerks I  don't think I need to do them anymore.

Do not train them until 1 month before a comp - no point for me IMO.

at the end its all about having a low bf percentage. how many times you dont see fat fucks "training" abbs and stuff but only should be on the cardio machines for the first two years.

most of the fat guys (on here)  have just thrown their hands at "having abs" and stay content with being a permabulker and calling me a "homo"

Being overweight is fine, but irl I have never heard anyone ever say they would rather be big and strong than lean. That phenomenon is strictly a getbig thing. In the real world, no guy wants to be fat.
