GIANT lizards eat fisherman alive for "stealing fruit"
« on: March 24, 2009, 01:10:07 PM »
These things are scary  :o

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/03/24/komodo.dragon/index.html

" An Indonesian fisherman has been killed by Komodo dragons after he was attacked while trespassing on a remote island in search of fruit, officials said Tuesday.

Muhamad Anwar, 32, bled to death on his way to hospital after being mauled by the reptiles at Loh Sriaya, in eastern Indonesia's Komodo National Park, the park's general manager Fransiskus Harum told CNN"

"Komodo dragons, the world's heaviest lizards, can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length and have a toxic bite that they use to kill prey such as buffalo, returning to feast when the animal succumbs to the poison.

Despite their ungainly appearance, the carnivorous reptiles can run as fast as a dog in short bursts, jump up on their hind legs, and kill animals with a blow of their powerful tails"

Should have worn a protective suit.

If he's stealing fruit how could he afford a protective suit?

Too funny. These dragons live on Komodo Island. How could this guy, a local fisherman, not know this. I'd avoid this island like it had King Kong on it.  :o

I've seen one of those nature shows on these creatures. They're pre-historics things, and they move really fast, and they eat meat - on the hoof if necessary. You'd be farked.

they are actually not venomous its just that their mouths are so bacteria-filled from rotting meat that anything they bite will typically die of infection/blood poisoning or something like that, relatively soon after they are chewed on.

they have no natural predators on their islands, humans who go there are seen as an easy food source :o

ive been to that island, and those things are huge. at full speed i think it will out run you, i saw it run about 20 yards to feed and i dont think i could have beat it in a foot race in that short distance. most were about 8-10 feet long. they look very docile and slow but they are very fast and aggressive. and they attack in numbers and stalk its prey. i dont think that guy knew the komodos were there.

from wiki...

Venom and bacteria

In late 2005, University of Melbourne researchers concluded that the perentie (Varanus giganteus), other species of monitor, and agamids may be somewhat venomous. The research team showed that the immediate effects of bites from these lizards were caused by mild envenomation.

The bite of the Komodo is not poisonous per se but rather infectious bacterially speaking, or put more bluntly, they have filthy mouths. The prey once bitten is doomed to languish in agony for several days, though the beasts will eat the prey whilst it is still alive.

Yes, very close relatives of the dinosaurs and very intelligent(for lizards). Mine is a black throat monitor and the little bastard is smart. He escaped once and was seen almost 1/2 mile from my house. He actually found his way back. I put him in a shower stall once, because it was cold outside. It has a door that you have to slide in a fairly complicated fashion. After about 20 minutes he figured it out. I put him in there again 3 months later and he instantly remembered how to do it.

Ok this has been posted twice so far in this thread.  Sounds like pure bullshit to me and from what I've read on Komono dragons.  Post up a source???????  Their venom is in fact poisonous.  What the hell kind of bacteria would they get that is deadly from eating raw meat?  E coli?  LMAO!  I eat raw meat and if I bite someone I aint going to kill them let alone paralyze them. .  Same with dogs, same with wolves etc.
