GPS Units & Bodybuilding
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:26:31 AM »
My dad drives a lot, and his eyes aren't what they used to be.  I'm looking into buying him a GPS unit for his birthday.  Anyone have any recommendations on decent ones?  I want to keep it $200 or under if possible.  Something plain and easy to use.  Thanks!

Garmin makes an easy to use model for the price point you are at.

Yes, I would stay with magellan or Garmin.  Both are good units, almost the same.
Costco has the one with the bigger screen on the Magellan, that is under $200.
6 months ago, I got my dad the one with the smaller screen for the same price.

Everybody knows you don't use UPS to deliver your gear.  you lose your 4th amendment expectation with a private company.

Steer clear of the "Mio", as it tends to be very anti-intuitive and just plain daft.  Maybe I had been too spoiled by using a TomTom, but when I tried to use a Mio it was a fucked experience.

TomTom is something I can testify to.  Right now, there are two low-priced models - Best Buy, at last look, has one for around $100 and the other for about $160 - that's the one I have, and will personally vouch for.

The Garmin Nuvi's slaughter everything else on the market by a considerable margin.

Most GPS units do not require a subscription.   They work forever after purchase.  To update maps once a year or so costs about $30-$100 depending on manufacturers, but that's optional depending on how updated you want it to be.

Some units with advanced features like traffic detection/live updates do require a monthly fee.  But that again depends on which manufacturer and the various add-ons and services they offer.

I've never used a tom tom, but they are inexpensive.  I never had any problems with lower
priced garmin or magellan.  Fuck, they all use the same satellite anyway, its really all with
the way it gives you directions visually and audio
