Surprise surprise.

Limbaugh's ratings spike amid Dem attacks
Posted: 02:41 PM ET

(CNN) – A conservative media watchdog group says recent Democratic attacks on Rush Limbaugh may have given a big boost to the talk radio host's ratings.

According to the Media Research Center, stations that carry Limbaugh's day time talk show experienced a "dramatic surge" of listeners in February — the month when congressional Democrats and even President Obama publicly took swipes at the conservative talker.

"President Obama declared war on Rush Limbaugh and his ratings went through the roof," said Media Research Center's Brent Bozell. "If that's not a magnificent backfire, I'm not sure what is."

Democrats have been eager to paint the divisive Limbaugh as the de facto Republican leader, especially after the radio host's controversial statement that he hoped the president's economic policies would fail.

Obama himself warned congressional Democrats in late January that they need to "can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done."

Yes they have.In fact early this week in the generic "who would you vote for republicans or democrats" the republicans took a lead for the first time in years.I believe the dems creeped back up to even or slightly ahead, but this attack has backfired incredibly badly.People see right through it.

Attack?  Our president just warned the people that turning to a disc jockey for political direction may not be in their best interest.

Rush wants Obama to come on his DJ talk show to debate.

Great.  An uneducated DJ v. a harvard trained constitutional lawyer.  Why Rush would win for sure.

Now if they had a hotdog eating contest, I'd think Rush would stand a fair chance of emerging the victor.

Given the Obama/Democrat Party strategy to paint Rush as the leader of the Republican Party, Obama should go debate him.

For an uneducated DJ, he gets plenty of attention.  President even refers to him by name.

Which leader of the Dem party did Bush debate in March of 2001?

You said the pres of the US should debate someone.

The president doesn't debate anyone in march of his first term, whether the opposing party has a leader or not.

Given the Obama/Democrat Party strategy to paint Rush as the leader of the Republican Party, Obama should go debate him.

Pointing out that the DJ stepped into the leadership void of the rightwing in this country is no anointment by Obama.

Rush appeals to the 20%.   The 20% who think Bush was a great president, that Iraq attacked us on 9/11, etc.  During a panic, like we have with the current economy, people look for direction.  That 20% can grow to 21% or more b/c people need leaders.

Rush provides easy answers to complex questions.  His rhetoric is convincing to people who do not want the messy complexities of life to interfere with rigidly defined understanding/beliefs of how things are or ought to be.  Some not normally swayed by his deceptive rhetoric might listen b/c panic/anxiety can create a crisis of confidence in understanding and direction.

Obama just pointed out that Rush is a showman and not a serious man.

The president can debate whoever the heck he wants, whenver the heck he wants.  Pretty poor excuse.

It's actually a coordinated effort by those on the left to use Rush as some sort of boogeyman.  The man's name should have never come out of Obama's mouth.  Bad strategy IMO.

But since he and his minions opened the door, I think Rush was smart to challenge Obama to a debate.  I don't think either one of them is very good at debating, but it would be very entertaining.

From the beginning there have been scammers like Rush.  Look up Father Coughlin.  A Rush progenitor.

Obama just pointed out that Rush is a showman and not a serious man.

If Rush is just an insignificant showman, why did the President mention him by name?  Why not just ignore him?

Let me guess...he had to say something because even though only 20% are dumb enough to believe Rush, they would stand in the way of St. Barry saving this nation.   ::)

Since he is just a scammer, why did the President dignify his existence?

I don't recall Bush calling moveon.org the face of the Democrat party.  But who cares?  This is about Obama and his cronies and their rather silly attack on an entertainer.

Let's take Rush out of his studio and prop him up in front of a live mic at a debate judged by experts in forensic events.  Rush would collapse like the house of cards that he is.

Obama had to address Rush.  The chairman of the republican party bowed down before Rush.  Who is running that party anyways?  Based on the facts at hand, it seems to be Rush.

B/c scamming works.  If it didn't work, Rush might endeavor to some sort of legitimate scholarship.

Then why are you upset?  Assuming you are Democrat, it would make sense for you to want the opposition to be in disarray.  And if a party's de-facto leader is a fat, uneducated DJ who can't function outside his studio, you should be thrilled.

I've heard Rush debate.  I've heard Obama debate.  As I said, neither one of them is very good.

He didn't have to address Rush.  I see you have the talking points down.  You been talking to James Carville?  :)

Steele made a dumb mistake by talking about Rush, but I do agree that the Republican party really has no true leader (or message) right now.

Again, you are only proving that you dislike Rush.  Why, again, why, was it necessary for Obama to mention him by name?  And then think there wouldn't be any sort of backlash?

I'm not upset.  He doesn't influence my thinking.

And I don't think the dissemination of falsehoods and propaganda serve the country's interest.  Rush is bad for america in that respect.

He pollutes the waters of genuine discourse with his bloviating.  It's his right to do so.  It's just that we all suffer for his obfuscation.

Rush is an irritant to our nation's discourse.  Why pretend he and his 20 million people don't exist?  Remember the last time the right wing had a democratic president to Tee off on 24/7?

The rightwing anti-government hero Tim McVeigh answered the call.  Down goes the federal building, down goes the federal building, down goes Frazier.
