Flex Wheeler 1995 vs. 1998
« on: March 30, 2009, 08:03:37 PM »
Was there really much difference?  In 95 they gave him 8th, and in 98 they gave him 2nd.  Can you tell which one looks better?

He was much bigger and fuller in 98, with better sweeps and density. Doesn't show in those pics, but in 95, he'd just bounced back from the auto accident and you could tell he was far from his 'normal' shape. Nearly got beaten by guys like Aaron baker in the spring shows and of course, placed 2nd to Mike Francois in the AC. By the Olympia, he was no better. In 98, he was only lacking in conditioning (the last 2 - 3%), but had a lot more size and density that made him look a lot bigger and better.

3 years in the g4p trenches with all that sperm flying everywhere takes its toll.  his skin looks a lot more dried out in the second photo.

Interesting post Bobs.  You are an astute and keen observer. There may be slight differences in conditioning but not enough to warrant such vast differences in placings.

He looks a bit bigger, and also has a bigger waist, in 98.  Overall I don't see much difference, and I think if (hypothetically speaking) no one knew of his accident earlier in the 90's they would also feel that the difference in 95 vs. 98 was not much at all.

Placings from year to year don't mean much since there are many variables that change.

He was clearly more cut in '98, it's as plain as day. Also bigger. Those pics don't show that he had a bigger waist, they're at different angles.

I am of the opinion that the 96 NOC was his best show- even better than 93 ASC. That was a very underrated show. Ronnie was in spectacular shape too

the difference is that in 95 they placed him right while in 98 they gave him a big gift!!..

before mr. o. 98 and after dorian's retirment flex showed a very good shape at the AC and the Ironman and was pointed at as the next mr. olympia.. everybody was preparing himslef to accept flex to be mr. olympia.. so when he came clearly off the judges were affected by the propaganda before the show and placed him 2nd ahead of some clearly better guys like the wizard of truth and levrone..

There is a huge difference and the fact you can't see this explains why you think Nasser was shafted

Have you got any scans of the spring shows from 1995, ND? Aaron Baker looked amazing in the Ironman and could have easily beaten Flex, although it was pretty close and Flex winning wasn't that shocking either. And do you think Aaron B could beat Kai Greene? They are both of similar height and weight and IMO, Aaron had a much better shape, although Kai does have him in the lower back and hams.

aron baker was one of the most underrated bbs of all times.. in 1994 i couldn't understand how to place a guy like potral cotrel 5th and place aron out of the top ten!!..

I think his joining the WBF might have negatively impacted his placings in the IFBB when he came back, although most of the times he placed low was because he could never nail his conditioning. He was always holding water, but looked awesome nonetheless cause he was huge and had tiny joints and round, full muscle bellies. Reason Porter placed high was because he always his conditioning was always top-notch.

Aaron did place in the top 6 in a lot of shows from 94 - 96, but other than the spring shows of 95, he wasn't very conditioned in most of his appearances and that was a time when the level of competition was very high / highest in the IFBB.

potral's condition was good but he was narrow and his triceps were weak.. he seemed to be a nice guy but i belive he didn't deserved to be 5th in 94.. chris cormier was much better and came in 6th!!.

Yeah, I was never a fan of Porter either. We were talking about him placing over guys like Aaron, which is why I mentioned his conditioning, which was the only reason he placed so high. And the 94 Mr Olympia wasn't judged very well - Chris Cormier's placing was actually higher than he deserved cause he was very smooth (Mike Quinn later said he was as smooth as a baby's ass, lol), while Aaron Baker and Roland Cziurlock got the shaft big time. They both should have placed higher based on their shape and conditioning.

BTW, there's an old rumor in Getbig that GH15 is in fact, Roland Cziurlock.
