U.S. voters don't blame Obama for economy
« on: March 31, 2009, 03:22:12 AM »
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – ...Washington Post/ABC News poll published on Tuesday.

Asked who was responsible for the economic meltdown, 80 percent in the poll blamed banks, financial institutions and corporations. Some 70 percent also blamed consumers for taking on too much debt and the former Bush administration for lax regulation. Only 26 percent said the Obama administration was not doing enough to turn the situation around.

Two-thirds of respondents approve of the way Obama is handling the presidency, and 60 percent approve of the way he is handling the economy.

Sixty-four percent said were confident Obama's policies will improve the economy, down from 72 percent just before he took office in January.

Forty two percent said the country was now heading in the right direction, a five-year high. Late last year, when then-President George W. Bush was in its final months, as many as nine in 10 American said the country was heading in the wrong direction.

Ok.

That's all nice.

But what really matters is that Obama actually manages to fix the economy.

Not what people think of him.

Wow.  Huge numbers there.  I know a lot of getbiggers claim the repubs are gonna win 80 seats in 2010 and the White house in 2012.  Despite the toughest pill to swallow being trillions in printed $, 3/4 of the population is still smitten with Barry.

Doesn't matter if they can't think their way outta a paper bag.

if 50.1% of them back obama in 2012, it's 4 more years of dem rule.  And after 47% of the country just voted against him... now, 2 months later, only 26% of the country are hating on obama for the economic mess.

It's like things are getting BETTER for him.  I don't know how repubs can be so optimistic, but they are.

I disagree with that. They like OBAMA ,they dont like Pelosi or Reid or the democratic congress or senate.Ever check out their polls?Rush Limbaugh is more polpular then Pelosi.Chris Dodd will loose his race in CT.Remember, all the republicans have to do,is gain a few seats in the senate and the Obama agenda is blocked. That will be the greatest thing thats EVER happened to the country.

This is an unusual situation where the president is very popular but his policies are at best 50/50 approved.  I believe its because of the PR campaign beginning with his campaign and the continued avoidance of harsh personal criticizm by the mainstream media.
Obama is connecting with the people publicly, he is likeable, he presents himself very well, and I believe some back him a little more because of the historic nature of the presidency.  While important, I look at policies far more.  I think its important to have a president who communicates well and is more open with the people (different than Bush) but policy is what matters most.  A large # of American people just look on the surface of things.  The Obama/Pelosi/Frank/Geithner team is doing some scary things to our country IMO.  I believe they are doing what they feel is right based on their ideas of fairness but they are changing this country and many people don't like the far left policies.  I feel like they are loosing the moderates.
