  Batman is a commando leader with fancy gadgets and above average strengh and athletic skills; Superman is a god-like extraterrestrial with powers beyond Human comprehension who's only weakness is an element that doesen't even occur naturally on Earth. Yes, this is a tough one. This is even a more retarded debate then Star Wars vs Star Trek or replicators vs Borg.

  Batman gets jerked around by:

  - Psychotic clown with no super-human skills besides his incredibly high pain threshold, and who struggles with schizofrenia, paranoia and several mental ilnesses at once.

  - Half man, half sea bird mutant who, again, posseses no super-human skills besides scaring people with his ugliness.

  Batman gets fucked by:

  - Regular bullets.

  - Gravity.

  - Punches.

  - Napolitan matiffs.

  Superman only gets challenged by super-human beings so powerful that their actions distabilize the Universe itself:

  - Brainiac, who can has an entire army of mentally enslaved super-human to do his bidding.

  - Green Lanterns, who can posses a ring given to them by The Guardians Of The Universe that alloows them to bend the very laws of physics and destroy entire solar systems like you would squash a bug with a newspaper.

  - Lex Luthor, who own 80% of the World's tech base and uses all of it to try to destroy Superman.

  - Apocalypse, Being of immense power created by a rogue Kryptonian scientist who's punches are so powerful that they generate earthquakes that register at 12 on the Richter scale and can literally crack the Earth's tectonic plates, and who's body is made of such uber tough alloys and possesed of such regenerative abilities that it can survive the explosion of a supernova on point blank.

  Yeah, what a complete mismatch.

  A much better fight would be Superman vs The Hulk + Spiderman together, or better yet, Superman vs Spiderman + Sandman. That would be nice to see.

You are totally correct that in a fair fight Superman bests Batman. In fact in a fair fight Superman wipes the floor with everyone.

But Batman never plays fair, he never goes up to a villain and says "Ok well you don't have tear-gas and Armor so I won't use them".

Batman's strength lies in knowing his limitations and the weaknesses and strengths of his enemies. Also careful methodical planning and being one step ahead of his opponent mean that whilst he might not beat Superman it won't be the walkover you envisage. That's the attraction of the Batman character, he's just a normal human who uses guile and cunning to defeat creatures more powerful than him on paper. Superman on the other hand IS interested in a fair fight, he's the hero incarnate, he would agree to terms in a fight because deep down he doesn't want to hurt anyone. Deception and planning will always beat brute force and good intentions.

You may not think that Superman and Batman belong in the same universe, but that doesn't change that fact that they are both part of the DCU. You're right that Bruce wouldn't normally stand a chance against Clark in a face-to-face, bare-knuckle fight. However, if Batman has time to prepare the battlefield in advance, he has ways of taking away Superman's powers (red-sun radiation, kryptonite, even magic). If Superman faced Batman without his super-strength, speed, invulnerability, etc., Bruce would wipe the floor with him.

Some of you don't realize that Batman is not just a man with a lot of money and a bulletproof suit. Bruce Wayne has trained his body and mind to the peak of human potential. He's basically the perfect human being. Aside from that, he's also a master tactician, world's greatest detective and the best martial artist in the entire DCU.

Aside from kyptonite, Superman still is not invincible. Batman will find all of Clark's weakness' and exploit them vividly. If Superman and Batman were to organize a duel to the death, my money is all on Batman. If Superman planned to zap Batman with his heat vision from 20 miles away, Batman would have already known about it even before Superman. In fact, i'll put my money on Batman against any other superhero in the DCU.

The JLA issue "Tower of Babel" shows just how dangerous Batman is and how - if he wanted - he can take out the entire Justice League.

If you've read Hush you can see why Batman would win against Superman "Deep Down Clark's essentially a good person. Deep Down I'm Not" In the battles that have been written, Superman is never all that interested in defeating Batman, just calming him down and stalling him, or at the very least putting him down. It's just his personality.
