The cop was well within his right to stop this guy when he violated the law.  However, most reasonable people would have let this guy go and then follow him to the hospital.  Thats the right thing to do.  I think it was bad decision by the officer....but what if the guy was lying?  I mean, its turns out he wasn't...but how many people come up with BS excuses when cops pull them over?  It happens to cops every day.

Even if we think the cop overstepped his bounds, No way in hell should this young cop be forced to resign, thats completely unfair.  I think we have the benefit of hindsight here.  If the mother-in-law didn't die, this wouldn't be a story.
Lets see here, a nurse, the hospital security, and a doctor came out and STILL the cop would not let him go.  With evidence like this, THE COP IS NOT FIT TO BE A COP!
Most are all show no go!

Cops need to be reasonable. There are always circumstances.  All the cop needed to do was go to the hospital with him, especially when he can see the situation.  You DO NOT get these type of excuses all o the time, in fact, very rare.

Unfortunately, this cop blew it, and picked the wrong person to screw with.  And the cop forgot it was being taped.

The cop resigned, he apoligized and the stress of the job got to him.

Ron, the cop pulled him over IN THE HOSPITal Parking lot, a nurse came out, security said it was true TO THE COP, as well as I believe a DR as well.
The cop was a  punk cock sucker, you can see it in his face on the picture released.
Most are all show no go!

I just watched that video above.  The cop is a wise ass and the NFL player also handled the situation poorly.  The NFL player is understandably upset that he was stopped for running the light but continues to argue and run his mouth the whole time while the cop is talking to him.  The cop is much more calm but I didn't like him saying "shut your mouth" either.  That would piss me off too.
Overall, its an unfortunate situation.  When you are pulled over, you shouldn't argue like this guy did, which escalated the situation.  It would have been better if the NFL player said "officer, my Mother-in-law is dying, please allow me go and you can follow me if you'd like to verify".  I think the officer should be reprimanded, perhaps suspended, but not forced to leave.

And nowhere did I see anything that implies racism...thats the least debateable part of this.  Why was that brought up?  Because a white cop pulled over a black citizen?  Bad call there.

I didn't see that, but if hospital personel verified the situation, the cop should have let him go immediately IMO.

The guy was a prick...... plain and simple...... the cop was white and the football player was black...... you have to ask yourself if this cop has a superiority complex and thinks he is king shit....... he might be racist too. Many cops are racist, not all but many are.

What in the hell made this racist?

Because a white cop pulled over a black guy and acted like an idiot, I guess.

I had a cop tell me one time that he was arresting a black guy and their was a token "ghetto crowd" that was hanging around, one of them yelled "Why you always arresting a brotha?"  His response "Cause you are the ones commiting the crimes!"  ;D

"racist no....lack of good judgement yes"

Agreed.

The video has racist in the title, I saw it labeled racist somewhere else on the net and heard racism mentioned on one of the news stations.  That term is way over used.  It needs to be used only when appropriate so it can be dealt with harshly.  Throwing that term around like we have done in recent years devalues it.

He isnt a racist...He pulled over Zach Thomas' wife for making an illegal U turn...the same guy..Put her in jail for it, she didnt even have a suspended license. He had a "God complex."

I am certain that if a black cop had pulled this football player over, a black cop would have given him permission to go see the dying mother in law. I am white and I will stand by this statement. Racism is alive and well, with many police officers in many cities.

But you cannot call racism on this case based on the evidence here.

Mal, who is Zach Thomas?  How the hell can he put someone in jail for a simple traffic violation?

But mal, maybe he heard that Zach's sister was married to Jason Taylor soooooo....... ;D

I don't think the guy is a racist.  And he sure doesn't have the disposition to be a good cop.

Ok Tommy...but we have the benefit of hindsight here.  The cop did not know if the story was true or as dire as they made it seem...and even if the cop believed him, he would then choose to allow the law to be broken because of a greater emotional issue, which is fine.  I already said that the cop should have let the NFL player go, and we all know cops can sometimes be assh-les but I don't think the cop should have been pushed out of the force for this incident alone.  If this was one of many examples of this cop pushing his weight around, then glad he's gone.  Thats not what was reported.
Also, what in particular made this incident racist?  Did the cop use racial terms?  (I may have missed that part if so)

Hi SF. We just disagree, that's all. IMO the cop had all the info he needed right in front of him, to come to the correct conclusion...

*Vehicle stopped in the hospital parking lot.
*Old lady and wife in the vehicle.
*NFL guy is clearly emotional.
*Old lady and wife are clearly emotional.
*NFL guy presented zero threat to anyone.

...and the cop still threatens the guy with deadly force? The cop is unstable and a menace to society.

I have a lot of buddies that are police officers in Cleveland.  its a tough job in the city, particularly where many of them work.  Most of these guys aren't racist but because of past experience, if they see someone looking ghetto, they are extra suspicious and take the necessary precautions to protect themself.

Last month, my buddy told me he pulled this guy over for speeding.  As he got to the car he drew his pistol cause something didn't look right (was ghetto dressed black dude, I don't know more details).  Turns out the guy had reached for a pistol under the seat and was raising it just as my buddy decided to draw his gun as he got to the window.  This is a simple traffic stop.
So the guy has a pistol pointing through the lower end of the door and my buddy then pointed his pistol at this guy's head.  My buddy is a bit crazy and must of convinced the guy that he was going to shoot him and the guy dropped the gun.  He then cuffed him and took him away.  This is some of the shit these guys have to deal with and why they sometimes over-react in certain situations... to protect themselves based on past situations with idiots.  It doesn't justify treating people wrong but is street smart in certain situations.  (That story does not apply to this case, just providing a reason for certain instances of reasonable profiling).

Tommy, I don't disagree anymore.  If the hospital staff was there and provided justification, thats enough for me.
I was more or less presenting another side to consider before that info.  Everyone jumped on this guy so quickly because of the outcome (which is hindsight).

He shouldn't have ran the light.

He didn't.   went though slowly with his hazards on.  Perfectly reasonable considering the circumstances.  This cop was 100% wrong.

The nurses came out and told the cop the mother was dying....watch the video....cop is 100% wrong.  He spoke down to Moet from the second he pulled him over.

In regards to your claims about Moets above, he was far more calm and respectful than he could have been.  He did 100% nothing wrong and your not looking at this event from an unbiased perspective.  My brother is a cop and I find the actions of the officer in question disgusting.  The video says it all....the cop is a fucking asshole from the first second.

I never buy in to the race acrd thing with cops....it's bullshit most of the time....but here?  It's warrented to at least talk about.

Blah blah blah says all the people with ZERO LE experience.  Look at it from the Cops perspective.  A pimped out SUV runs a red light. When he pulls over the driver tells you to F@$K off, the passengers jump out, disregard your order to stay in the vehicle and run inside a hospital.  I would be thinking at that point "stolen vehicle".  He did everything by the book up to the point that hospital staff confirmed that the mother was indeed dying.  Of course the race card was pulled here...   ::)  As usual..  Lord forbid any accountability...  In the end BOTH parties were to blame to some degree.  The chief of Police had NO backbone of support for his officer...  Sad for both people.  One out a job the other out a mother in law...

Slowing down and putting on your hazards doesn't give someone the legal right to run a red light.

Reminds me of the joke....cop pulls someone over for slowing down and going thru a stop sign (redlight).  Person says there is no difference.  Cop starts beating them with a baton and says "do you want me to stop or slow down?"

I didn't say it did.....but it's being described like Moets sped through a redlight.  Sorry, if my mother in law was on her death bed, and my wife was hysterical beside me, I might do the same thing.  The video don't lie, it's 100% clear this cop was in the wrong.  It is what it is.  What the cop should have done was let Moets go inside to see his mother in law and ticketed him at a later date.  It was all on video.

The cop was trying to be a prick.....it's not rocket science.  I can see why Moets was pulled over, but anything after that is fucked up.
