Newt: Attack North Korea with electromagnetic pulse
« on: April 05, 2009, 09:27:49 PM »
Cool idea!!

Only hours after North Korea launched a rocket, Newt Gingrich was on television saying the United States should have preemptively attacked the nuclear-armed country – with an electromagnetic pulse.

"We do not appreciate the scale of threat that is evolving on the planet," the former House Speaker said on Fox News Sunday. "And North Korea is a totally irresponsible dictatorship run by a person who is clearly out of touch with reality."

The North Korean government says it launched an experimental communications satellite that is now orbiting in space; U.S. officials claim it was a missile that quickly fell into the Pacific ocean.

President Barack Obama, in Prague on his first tour of Europe, blasted the rocket launch as "provocative," saying it violated a U.N. resolution, and pledged to take action at a U.N. Security Council meeting. Obama had joined other world leaders in urging the hard-line communist state to drop plans to test a missile.

But to Gingrich, who said on Fox that all United Nations dealings with both North Korea and Iran have been ineffective, talk is cheap. "One morning, just like 9/11, there's gonna be a disaster," the former Georgia congressman said. "And people are going to look around and say 'Gosh, why didn't anyone think of that?' Well I'm telling you, the time to think about it is before the disaster, and not after."

Pressed by Fox host Chris Wallace, Gingrich mentioned a few preemptive possibilities for stopping North Korean: "There are three or four techniques that could have been used, from unconventional forces to standoff capabilities... I'd recommend look[ing] at electromagnetic pulse...which changes every equation about how risky these weapons are."

An electromagnetic pulse is a short, high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy which can damage electronic and electrical equipment.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) agreed with Gingrich's preemptive policy, saying that "in the countryside of South Carolina, at some point you've got to back up words with action."

Obama, who on Sunday called for a nuclear-free world, said North Korea should be punished and that "rules must be binding, violations must be punished, words must mean something."

Congressman Howard Berman, who heads the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that the U.N. Security Council should take further action. Berman called on China and Russia – which have diplomatic ties with Pyongyang – to join ranks with the United States and its allies Japan and South Korea in condemning the test.

WOW...all of this anger over Korea launching of a satellite into orbit... I wonder how angry Korea is over america illegally attacking and occupying a sovereign UN nation: Iraq and stealing its resources??? Hmmmmm... Did not the UN protest to america attacking Iraq as well? (YES) I wonderd if Korea worried when america dropped two atomic bombs on Japan? Did the radiation float over to Korea as well? How about the america attack on Korea...another illegal war to try and take control of it? I wonder if Korea and the UN are still angry over that????

Someone needs to remind america of its past...and present

When did we attack Korea...its actually nKorea u dumb idiot and they invaded the South or the ROK. The North is an isolated communist country thats starving its own people. They kidnap foreign nationals. They support and arm terrorists. SAMSON u really have no idea what ur talking about do u. The UN authorized action against Iraq.

The position of the US and UK is that the invasion was authorized by a series of UN resolutions dating back to 1990. Resolution 1441 declared that Iraq was in "material breach" of the cease-fire under UN Resolution 687 (1991), which required cooperation with weapons inspectors. The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties states that under certain conditions, a party may invoke a "material breach" to suspend a multilateral treaty. Thus, the US and UK claim that they used their right to suspend the cease-fire in Resolution 687 and to continue hostilities against Iraq under the authority of UN Resolution 678 (1990), which originally authorized the use of force after Iraq invaded Kuwait.[29] This is the same argument that was used for Operation Desert Fox in 1998.[30] They also contend that, while Resolution 1441 required the UNSC to assemble and assess reports from the weapons inspectors, it was not necessary for the UNSC to reach an agreement on the course of action. If, at that time, it was determined that Iraq breached Resolution 1441, the resolution did not "constrain any member state from acting to defend itself against the threat posed by Iraq".[31

U'd have to almost declare the fact that we have a weapon that produces it, so that the Chicoms and the Ruskies don't go nuts thinking we detonated an airburst nuke....kinda touchy.

I don't think we have anything that can do that, unless u airburst a nuke. If we do, Newt committed a Nat Sec violation

Even cooler was Newt's plan to have John Rambo and Jason bourne parachute into kim Jung Il's mansion and steal his massive porn collection during the brownout.

I was actually wondering if Newt fucked up by saying that too.  I know a lot of people will look at that as an admition to technologies that have been accused but not confirmed.

you know anyone with a little research can build a small scale emp device.  If the hobbyiest can do it playing around, what can highly funded military projects do?  Tesla fucked with this stuff with success and that was a long ass time ago.  He took the technology to the US gov and later tried to take it to the Russians if I remember right.  At the time he thought it would end war.  I guess his thinking was that if everyone had this weapon, war would be pointless.  Kind of the same thinking that some had with nukes but well before that.

Pelosi is an elected official...and she's actually done it. If Newt was pointing to an unknow weapons system then he should get a talking to.....but he didn't say "I'd employ the X-100 super micro cannon" he said he's use and EMP. I'll assume he wasn't talking nuke. Pelosi actively undermined Bush with things she said in Syria. Congressmen did the same thing....Reid said the war in Iraq was lost. Thats ok for somebody writing for the Daily Kos, but a US Senator?

from my understanding the technology could be used from ground or placed in a bomb or missile.  I know they can do this stuff at least in a small radius so in a missile it wouldn't have to hit the target but only be close.  One problem is, the protection for emp is fairly simple.  If the electronics of the target are properly sheilded (which is simple, basic stuff) an emp isn't going to do jack shit unless it's insanely powerful.

Which was why i pictured some kind of ship based laser.

I don't think Hutcheson discovered or avanced anything dealing with emp weapons.  Tesla was the first on that scene.
