Ur kidding me right...how much trigger time do Russian and Chinese pilots get, how much time do they actually run combat missions. In the time it took to post this..we have maybe 100 aircraft in the air conducting actual combat missions. The Syrians had the same sytem when Israel, flying 15D aircaft...took out their nuke site 2 years ago. They didn't know the planes were there until the IAF wanted them to...as they left. SAMSON u know nothing. This guy doesn;t mention that does he..experince, training, actual combat experience...not to mention we're flying the 15D and the F-16 is the best air superiority fighter ever. See, u watch U-tube videos of aircraft...I've actually called in an airstrike...u play SOCOM...I've cleared buildings....stick to the black power movement.

Russia dispatched four ships to participate in a joint exercise with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's military. Two are combat vessels: the nuclear-powered cruiser Peter the Great and the destroyer Admiral Chabanenko. The other two vessels were described vaguely as support ships. Three Venezuelan frigates joined the Russian ships for the exercises, dubbed "Venrus 2008," according to Russian TV.

The four-ship squadron is barely a fraction of the nearly 1,000-ship force Russia could muster two decades ago. In addition, one of the two support ships is a seagoing tug, dispatched with the naval force to tow either of the two warships in case they break down.

The Russian fear of breakdowns of its top-drawer warships is not unfounded. Peter the Great just returned from three years of extensive repairs to its nuclear reactor. Poorly trained draftee sailors made mistakes in maintaining the nuclear reactor, and the warship barely escaped total destruction, according to reports published in Jane's.

A fatal accident that killed 20 aboard one of Russia's most advanced submarines overshadowed the deployment to Venezuela. The submarine was being field tested in the Sea of Japan before it became an official part of the navy, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Sources inside the Amur Shipbuilding Factory confirmed that the submarine Nerpa was built there. Construction of the Akula II class attack submarine was started in 1991 but suspended for several years because of a shortage of funding.

An investigation found that the release of Freon gas following the activation of the fire-extinguishing system killed the victims, including 17 civilian members of the shipyard crew aboard for the field testing.

The Russian air force is fairing no better than its navy. Its recent performance over Georgia displayed major lapses in training and poor performance of weapons in combat.

The Russian air force lost a top-of-the-line Backfire bomber to the paltry air defense tiny Georgia set up. In addition, several Russian strike aircraft were lost to ground fire, some of which might have been from Russian army troops who had no communications with the air force.

And a Russian military aviation icon is on the verge of collapse: The MiG design bureau cranked out advanced jet fighters that confronted the West at every turn in events for more than 60 years. From the skies over Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Yugoslavia, and around the world, MiGs squared off against their western counterparts in duels to the death.

Today, MiG remains alive only because of Moscow’s good graces. A recent audit revealed that the bureau is in debt for roughly $1.5 billion, according to reported figures. It also needed income to pay creditors. The collapse of a key export deal and a lack of domestic orders caused the problems.

MiG’s difficulties began in 2006 with what appeared to be a significant sale of 28 Fulcrum jet fighters to Algeria, a deal worth $3.1 billion.

However, that sale collapsed with 15 of the aircraft in service. The Algerian government refused to take delivery of the remainder and insisted on returning those Fulcrums it had received. Algeria claimed that the aircraft had substandard components, an allegation that Russia denies.

The failure of the transaction resulted in a near cutoff of MiG’s revenue stream. The company, which employs 25,000, now appears to have only a single significant contract with the Russian defense ministry: an upgrade program for the MiG-31 Foxhound.

The once mighty Red Army is now a pale imitation of itself, a wheezing symbol of Russia’s deterioration. From a total of three million men under arms toward the end of the Cold War, the Russian armed forces have shrunk to one million. That would be good news were it now a better force. But except for some elite units, most Russian troops are poorly trained and demoralized draftees subjected to pitiless hazing and prone to alcoholism, suicide and corruption. Ninety percent of the males supposedly required to complete the two-year stint of military service evade the draft both legally and illegally. Service contracts signed in 2004 ranged from 17 percent of the recruiting goal in the Moscow region to 45 percent in the North Caucasus.22. International Institute for Strategic Studies, Military Balance, 2005-2006 (Routledge, 2005), p. 151. Less than a fifth of the kontraktniki (those who sign up for the money) re-enlist, complaining of paltry pay and primitive living conditions.33. Nezavisimaya Gazeta, August 24, 2006. The problem transcends raw numbers. In 2005 an astonishing 40 percent of draftees were declared unfit to serve on account of physical or mental disabilities. Russia’s weaponry is aging and falling behind qualitatively, and new equipment reaches the armed forces in insufficient numbers. Defense spending has risen 25 percent annually since 2004, but years of neglect ensure that it will be a long time before existing armaments are replaced and soldiers’ morale and quality of life improve. The upswing in hardware expenditure is also mitigated by the 8 percent average inflation rate in 2004–06 and the need to allocate a large chunk of these monies to attract better-qualified people (particularly if plans for a volunteer force are to pan out).

The war between Georgia and Russia is providing some interesting insights into problems of fighting with a partner in the former Soviet Union.

Russian Su-25 Frogfoot strike aircraft have twice bombed the Su-25 production facility at Tbilisi airport. And the Russian-designed air defenses (the same type that were shut down with apparent ease by the Israeli Air Force during last year’s raid on Syria) are being operated with great success by the Georgians.

Russia has admitted to losing a total of four aircraft (the Georgians claim 10) in the conflict. So far they’ve admitted to the destruction of three Su-25 Frogfoot strike aircraft and a Tu-22M3 Backfire bomber that was flying a reconnaissance mission.

Backfire wreckage image: Georgia tv

Photos from the combat area show the wreck of the Tu-22 and a Frogfoot as well as a picture of the Backfire pilot in a Georgian hospital. The pilot was Colonel Igor Zinov, a 50 year old Tu-22M3 instructor pilot stationed at the Russian Flight Test Center at Akhtubinsk.  “Ergo, the Russians are using their A-Team, as expected,” says a U.S. analyst.

Other analysts say the Georgian’s are probably operating the SA-11 Buk-M1 (low-to-high altitude) and the (low-to-medium altitude) Tor-1M mobile air defense missile systems.

“The Russians have gone to great lengths to try and implicate the Ukraine in the Russian Air Force losses, even going as far as to suggest that an SA-5 sold to the Georgians by the Ukraine was responsible for the Backfire loss,” a second U.S. analyst says. “That's clearly not the case, but shows the Russian attempt to bring the Ukraine into the periphery of this event by implication, and to attempt to explain how one of their premier long-range attack assets could have been shot down so easily.”

So if the Georgians over-estimated their ground forces, “It appears that the Russians underestimated the Georgian air defense abilities in this conflict, and have paid the price,” the U.S. analyst says.

I've been off for 4 days :) LOL.  bedpan boy.  You're an idiot.  There is much more to the nursing profession than cleaning bed pans.  I'd love for you to go to the various military hospitals and tell that to all the nurses that care for wounded soldiers and vets.  In fact there are a few nurses that actually run several military hospitals, above MD's because as you know the military is about rank not degree.

Nursing has to be a great job. Good pay, women around constantly and you can work just about anywhere.

Not my thing but I wish it were.

I wouldn't say it's great but it definitely beats a lot of jobs.  I go home at the end of my shift and leave everything at work.  I only work 3 12's a week and have 4 days off.  Great pay and good benefits and never have to worry about being unemployed.  And in the military as a nurse you can could end up managing doctors due to rank.
