Bush Deficit vs. Obama Deficit in Pictures
« on: April 19, 2009, 07:10:16 PM »

President Barack Obama has repeatedly claimed that his budget would cut the deficit by half by the end of his term. But as  analyst Brian Riedl has pointed out, given that Obama has already helped quadruple the deficit with his stimulus package, pledging to halve it by 2013 is hardly ambitious. The Washington Post has a great graphic which helps put President Obama’s budget deficits in context of President Bush’s.

What’s driving Obama’s unprecedented massive deficits? Spending. Riedl details:

President Bush expanded the federal budget by a historic $700 billion through 2008. President Obama would add another $1 trillion.

President Bush began a string of expensive financial bailouts. President Obama is accelerating that course.

President Bush created a Medicare drug entitlement that will cost an estimated $800 billion in its first decade. President Obama has proposed a $634 billion down payment on a new government health care fund.

President Bush increased federal education spending 58 percent faster than inflation. President Obama would double it.

President Bush became the first President to spend 3 percent of GDP on federal antipoverty programs. President Obama has already increased this spending by 20 percent.

President Bush tilted the income tax burden more toward upper-income taxpayers. President Obama would continue that trend.

President Bush presided over a $2.5 trillion increase in the public debt through 2008. Setting aside 2009 (for which Presidents Bush and Obama share responsibility for an additional $2.6 trillion in public debt), President Obama’s budget would add $4.9 trillion in public debt from the beginning of 2010 through 2016.

UPDATE: Many Obama defenders in the comments are claiming that the numbers above do not include spending on Iraq and Afghanistan during the Bush years. They most certainly do. While Bush did fund the wars through emergency supplementals (not the regular budget process), that spending did not simply vanish. It is included in the numbers above. Also, some Obama defenders are claiming the graphic above represents biased Heritage Foundation numbers. While we stand behind the numbers we put out 100%, the numbers, and the graphic itself, above are from the Washington Post. We originally left out the link to WaPo. It has been now been added.

CLARIFICATION: Of course, this Washington Post graphic does not perfectly delineate budget surpluses and deficits by administration. President Bush took office in January 2001, and therefore played a lead role in crafting the FY 2002-2008 budgets. Presidents Bush and Obama share responsibility for the FY 2009 budget deficit that overlaps their administrations, before President Obama assumes full budgetary responsibility beginning in FY 2010. Overall, President Obama’s budget would add twice as much debt as President Bush over the same number of years

Bump for the inevitable accusation that your article is made up and part of Fox News' conspiracy against Obama. Obama is perfect and has never done anything wrong ever.

The economy tanked and it was Bush's fault - now you need to spend to get out of the hole - get over it.

Presumably that chart doesn't include either the war in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Remember Bush never but those in his budget

Even taking those into account, these deficits are completely insane.  Additionally, I thought Obama was going to get us out of Iraq, so those costs should be going down.

Another point, why do the deficits balloon in the later years????  Is that Bush's fault too??

Actually it does. The chart is the total yearly deficit not budget numbers.

The numbers dont lie, the charts dont lie, only the TOTUS and his lackeys are spreading disinformation and lies about what he is proposing.

Additionally, much of the revenue projections Obama has are based on cap and trade tax revenue as well as insane projections on the rate of growth that the CBO says are not realistic.

The only thing Bush admitted to not including in budget and analyst predictions was the "thousands and thousands of dollars of people are making off Ebay".

Who remembers that line?  I can't think of the exact context.

He was and still is a national disgrace.

Its amazing that a person could get dumber as they get older.  Bush managed to do that.

George Orwell, the inspiration for your name on Getbig, was a lifelong left wing Socialist and one of my heroes.  Have you come to the realization yet that you owned yourself when you chose to base your moniker off of him given the opposite beliefs you have in regards to Orwell.

Do you think modernizing America is going to be CHEAP?  Have you ever been to Bejing? Tokyo? Singapore?  They are WAY AHEAD of us..  It will cost us TRILLIONS to get where they are and we NEED TO.  Obamas plan will actually create millions of jobs, people upgrading our electrical grid, starting to implement technology we should have been using 10 years ago.  Get over it, when your roof caves in on your house do you just stare at it?  Do you patch it? Or do you find out the newest technology and INVEST in the BEST so your home is up to par with the new technology?

Who is going to pay for all of this?  We already wasted trillions of dollars in the past few decades.

This is my major criticizm of the Obama administration.  The #s don't lie.  He is setting us up for 10+ years of deficits and our national deficit will be doubled in 5 years.  This is not sustainable and people need to wake up.  Many of us criticized Bush for this, but now its ok because its Obama?  Even though the spending is way higher than that of Bush?  That is not rational.  We must correct our deficit spending ways.  Obama hasn't even touched the social security mess yet.
This is not just 'cost of modernization'.

For all the mindless automotants that insist America is so backward and "behind"- Read "A Post American World" by Fareed Zarkaria. Just because many of the Asian countries aren't using chopsticks to heat their houses anymore, doesn't mean America is in danger of falling behind anyone. In case you idiots haven't been paying attention, all roads flow through us. When we fail, everyone fails- When we prosper, everyone prospers.

Maybe America wont be on top forever- But for the long haul, even if we do poorly, we are still vastly out performing the planet.

And Busted- That was a brilliant comment. You really should consider becoming an economist.
