What is the hCG Diet?
The "true" hCG weight loss diet protocol, researched and developed by Dr. ATW Simeons, consists of a very low calorie diet (VLCD) accompanied by treatments of hCG taken by injections.
While participating in the hCG diet one can expect a loss of .5 to 2 pounds of unwanted fat per day. In addition, the true benefit of the hCG protocol is its ability to help modify the dieter's relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss.
hCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a hormone produced in great amounts in pregnant females. During pregnancy, the substance almost completely controls the woman's metabolic functions. In non-pregnant persons, research suggests hCG similarly increases the metabolism similar to a pregnant female.
Dr. Simeons' research resulted in concluding that there were 3 different types of fat stored in the body:
- Structural Fat (between organs, etc.)
- Normal Fat (freely used for fuel when needed)
- Abnormal Fat (locked away and not available for use by the metabolism until the other 2 kinds of fat are depleted)
Diets don't normally work for those with Abnormal Fat stores because they lose the wrong kind of fat while dieting. HCG works at the metabolic level to release these abnormal fat stores into the bloodstream to be used as fuel, and this is why a VLCD (very low calorie diet) is needed to accompany the HCG dosage.
Thousands of calories in stored fat are released, and are used by the body or expelled. To keep the fat cells from immediately taking in more fat, the very low fat VLCD is necessary, and personal care products such as lotions and makeup containing animal fat are discouraged. Hcg wants to remove unwanted fat from your body and the fats in make-up, lotions and other such products will diminish optimal results.
Dr. A.T.W. Simeons' research suggests a small, daily injection amount of hCG (approx. 125 IU to 200 IU), results in an average weight loss of .5 to 2 lbs a day when accompanied by a VLCD (very low calorie diet). The hCG injections help stave off any hunger pangs a VLCD may cause because thousands of extra calories begin to flood the system from the abnormal fat being metabolized, so hCG diets are easier to stick to than a traditional healthy diet that simply restricts calories.
The first report on the use of hCG diet for the management of obesity was published in 1954 by the late Dr. ATW Simeons. While practicing in India, he noticed that the so-called "fat boys," who showed Adiposogenital dystrophy showed improvement when they were treated with hCG. But he also observed their body fat distribution and he felt it needed further research.
Dr. Simeons extended his investigations to patients showing different degrees of obesity, and concluded that hCG might be useful for the treatment of obesity due to various encourgaging observations sunsequently leading to his confidence in publishing these resutls for his peers. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Simeons and his family relocated to Rome, Italy where he began to expand his practice into the treatment of obesity.
After the first report on hCG use for obesity treatment, an innumerable amount Physicians all over the world visited Dr. Simeons in Italy, to learn first hand the hCG original protocol. Many of them failed because they altered his protocol.
Dr. Simeons suggested that the hCG diet, acting at hypothalamic level, might correct the basic hypothalamic disorder, and consequently adipose tissue metabolism.
