Thoughts on Liddell
« on: April 21, 2009, 11:55:00 AM »
It seems like ever since Rampage KO'd Chuck a few fights ago, he's been just not the same fighter...   and his one win was against Wandy and it wasn't his normal quick KO.

What's going on?   Is it just age?

I would say age and stuck with the same trainer when he needed a change
If a fighter sticks around long enough age/reflexes will end your career.

too much partying and age has caught up to chuck it seems....

he's never been in any wars either,I really don't remember him ever taking all that much punishment in any of his fights like most guys....

it's just like in boxing, for any aging fighter the legs are always the first thing to go and you can't rely on power if your chin won't hold up when someone reaches it...

I think its overstated a bit right now.  Everyone is saying he lost four out of his last five, but look, he lost to 1) Rampage...a monster who has beaten Chuck before in Pride 2) Rashad....a young undefeated stud who is the current champ and dropped him with a nice KO 3) Shogun....who was considered by many to be the best light heavy in the world not very long ago and 4) Jardine...the weakest of the group but a tough guy who bombarded him with leg kicks and got the decision deservedly so.

He also be Wandy who is a fucking animal.  Chuck could still kick some ass.  I don't know why Dana is making his decisions for him.  Fuck that.  If he wants to fight, let him fight.

chuck has lost a step cause of age, i just think the mma game is evolving fast and fighters are getting becoming better and better strikers, the chuck of 2000 was a whole different animal then what were seeing now ofcoarse. imho chuck was never an elite striker, when chuck went against allister chuck was getting mauled on his feet until he threw his overhand haymaker right and nailed allister. if you look back at chucks fights he never really did well against guys that where good strikers

losses vs strikers                 wins vs wrestlers/bjj

shogun                                  ortiz
evans                                    babalu
jardine                                   horn
rampage                                 randleman

i know this aint all his fights but i just wanted to give an example, i know someone might bring up the vitor fight but imo that fight could have went either way, although randy aint a bad striker and is decent, his bread and butter is the ground n pound. the wandy chuck fought aint the wandy of 2000, and vice versa, the chuck that wandy fought wasnt the chuck of 2000. that fight should have happened 8 or 9 years ago imo cause they fought eachother well past thier primes, ive always been a chuck fan and imo is a future hall of famer, im not in no way putting the man down but just stating a few facts and opinions.

chuck didnt have the greatest technique as a striker and imo that makes his success that much more impressive, i think chucks success came from his ability not to be taken down by the guys who had better bjj and wrestling, although chuck was no slouch in the wrestling department by no means, i believe he was a division 1 college wrestler. chuck has alot of heart as well as a great chin, i know in the last couples years his chin gave out on him somewhat but in chucks defense ive seen him get nailed by some big shots and take them pretty well.

id like to finish off by saying he gave us many exciting highlight reel ko,s over the years as well as some great slugfests in the 205 division, its great to see everyone on here not bashing chuck and staying respectful, imo chucks deserves the respect cause hes a fighter and never ducked anyone and treated fans and anyone for that matter with a freindly attitude

Great post.  Hands down by your waist to prevent the shot, looping punches, chin up makes for a bad equation against a good striker.  Chuck had his hands full against Mezger and Overeem as well BUT was able to pull off the KO.
