Hellwig (I refuse to call a grown man “Warrior”) has claimed the reason he did that was in an attempt to retain the rights to his name – or at least part of it.
The change occurred during (one of) the drawn out court battles between him & Titan.

I still don’t think it’s been completely resolved.

After he got canned for no-showing live events in 1996, Vince fired him. Warrior then retaliated by suing Vince for the rights to the name Warrior and won.

ie the courts believed that Warrior created the gimmick/character and thus had the legal rights to the likeness.
