I think it will be very serious. I don't know about deaths but with human to human it's that much more serious. I just hope things shake out and it's not contained so much that it doesn't get to run it's course.

You know how many people die every year from the "normal" flue?

THOUSANDS

Don't get tricked by this - it's every year the same last year it was bird flue - this year its swine flue

And antother thing, why do you think the once who got infected in the US and NZ diedn't die? It's because the virus is already on the down spiral

no offense, BSB
but it'd take pages to explain why the media is simply a construct to keep the masses perpetually afraid. Rapt in attention to what they will say (sell) next.

I think an outbreak of flu that is a hybrid variation passing human to human in a city of 20 million is something to be aware of. It's not fear mongering, they aren't hyping it up.
I don't see the sense in just keeping quiet about it rather than making people aware.

Okay, here are some sample headlines/sound bytes:

1) Asteroid storm coming...could it hit your neighborhood?
2) Serial rapist at large...what you should be worried about....
3) Anthrax scare...could it turn up in your mail...?

The answer to all these 'newsbytes' would be "NO", "NOTHING", and "NO".

Generally, for most of us, despite our greatest hopes and deepest fears...we all will live generally long, uneventful lives.

Just the facts.

I'm well aware of the fear mongering and headline yellow journalism shit. I'm more or less talking about this specific flu story. We are due for a pandemic of some sort, the virus is showing up in major population centers and young people have died who don't fit the typical mold of the victim with typical flu. These are all things to consider. Don't let your paranoia blind you that much.

There is your fear mongering right there, matey...why should we be "Due" for anything...?

Actually, my posts should tell you that I am not the least bit paranoid. I never care with one fragment of my being what the "News" tells me.
