The Times confirmed that the Protocols had been copied in large part from a French political satire that never mentioned Jews -- Maurice Joly's Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu (1864). Other investigations revealed that one chapter of a Prussian novel, Hermann Goedsche's Biarritz (1868), also "inspired" the Protocols.

Dear Straight Dope:
I'd like to know about the history of that infamous forgery "The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion." Who wrote it, and more importantly (to me anyways), why is it that so many people, even today, refer to it as fact? That Nazis and their bretheren are knuckleheads is no big surprise, but it seems a lot of otherwise even minded people believe the text is legitimate. Any ideas?

I don't know that we can really answer why so many believe it, other than to say some people have beliefs that are simply immune to facts--for example, Holocaust deniers. To a rabid anti-Semite it makes no difference that the Protocols have been debunked countless times. I question whether somebody who believes in the Protocols is "otherwise even minded"--simple minded is more like it. The thing is so far out there it defies belief.

First off you have used
'National geographic' as the first link, now we all know that 'NG' has been behind some huge cover up job's to protect 'paradigm ways of thought' in the states/world at large.
This is why these kinds of arguments/debates are frustrating, because the net is brimming with evidence for both parties to draw from, the event/documents - & the de-bunkers sites.
9/11 - 'JFK' conspiracy are classic examples of these, & the longer the amount of time that passes, the more muddy the water get's.
With that in mind, let us look at the 100 odd years that have passed since the 'POEZ' were first banded around.
They had to be demonized by the Zionist heirarchy, why ?? because it would have been suicide not to.
The main reason for this 'IMO' was that the 'Fuhrer' had copies that were recovered from various locations (residencies) & - NO-ONE could have a good justification for the 'Fuhrer' to take the action he did, so they were demonized, & many a reputable publication got on the band wagon.
