Find a gym version you like and be prepared to save more to get it. Trying to skimp with cheaper home versions, etc. won't cut it. Craigslist, Ebay, etc. will give you some savings but they're still not cheap to get a reliable, effective one, bottom line. Precor and others make good home versions as well that are less expensive, in which case you have to try them first they're slightly different in features and incline from the gym versions.
Myself i wouldn't want a reconditioned one from a gym, i want one from a private owner assuming it's not been abused.
