Shaquille O'Neal: hoopster, twitter fan, MMA fighter?
By Maggie Hendricks
It seems that everywhere, people are catching on to the benefits of learning mixed martial arts. Everyone includes basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal, who is spending his off-season training at Jonathan Burke's Gracie Gym in Orlando.

O'Neal, who is listed at 7'2" and 325 lbs., goes by his old nickname at the gym, Diesel. He's been training with Burke for 10 years, where he does the full gamut of MMA, boxing, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and wrestling. Burke said that O'Neal is in great shape, and loves the nature of the training.

"We can work drills 20 times through, and he works his tail off on everything," Burke said. "He has way more talent with this stuff than people would imagine."

O'Neal's specialty? Much like Clubber Lang, it's pain. Shaq-fu is said to have some killer knees as well as a phenomenal rear naked choke. He isn't the only athlete to try MMA, as former Redskins' wide receiver Michael Westbrook is now a jiu-jitsu player who won his only MMA match. Marcus Jones, a six-year NFL veteran, turned to MMA in retirement, and has won four fights. Will Shaq ever enter the cage?

"Not while he's playing," Burke said. "But you never know."

O'Neal recently told former UFC champ Chuck Liddell in a Twitter Post to look out for him. The upper weight of the UFC is 265 lbs., but with Jose Canseco fighting a 7'2" kickboxer in Japan, anything can happen. He just may be the first athlete to hold four NBA championship rings and a title belt

shaq would last about 25 seconds against a guy like brock, fight would start with brock taking shaq off his feet, then mounting shaq, then the gnp starts and its over for shaq

He'd be taken down soooo fast, someone would pass his "guard" and end the fight.

oh brother.  I hope shaq gets his ass handed to him.  He's just making MMA look even more retarded than it already is.  He's a big boy though.  It will be exciting to see just how his pure size holds up against the other fighters.

i think that it'll be a draw and then they will be ordered to a free throw contests.  Conseco wins 10-9 after a brutal hour of tossing bricks.

I can guarantee is training is all fluff, how many times has he been hit in the face.  Never, because they never let it go that far.  I would will like the king of the cage if they treated me like a prim a dona.  Inflate his ego just a little bit more.

how can you guys even consider Shaq competing in MMA?

just because he trains MMA? it was mentioned in an article that he trains and now you guys are fantacising about who he would fight and how he would do.

thats like surmizing how the girl in the kickboxing/cardio class who takes it for exercise would do againt Carano.

its just an activity for him. geez.

youre taking this way too seriously.

there is no legitimate mention of him wanting to compete in MMA, or even it crossing his mind.

Unless he's fighting George Muresan no holds barred, I dont think Shaq is beating anyone in MMA.

mockery? but it was just sarcasm.. ::)

funny how you guys fantasize about that and what moves he would be susceptible to and all... he uses it for training purposes.

i.e- everyone who runs for exercise isnt training for the olympics. anyone who plays basketball isnt planning on playing in the nba..its recreational..

"Shaq possibly fighting in maa soon!"  ::)    sensationalism at its best here on the boards!!

do you understand what making a mockery of something is?  It has nothing to do with sarcasm.  I can define the too or you can google the definitions.  Of course we make fun of this.  After all how many MMA fights have been decided by a free throw shoot out, where an ex baseball player has a shot of winning against a current NBA allstar.  And pulling a move for a win, is just plain fun.  So either, stop over analyzing things, or pick better battles to fight.

10 years of MMA training is pretty damn impressive, not to mention he's a 7"2 325 lb monster...

not sure why everyone's slamming him..

why would Shaq training in MMA be a mockery?  if someone in the UFC played basketball on the weekend w/his buddies would it be a mockery for the nba?

though you can try and pretend you didnt participate in the fantasy on a literary aspect.  ::)

training in MMA is different than actually fighting a professional match as the thread title implies.  Just because you have an easy-bake oven doesn't mean you are a pastry chef.  Should i make the difference clearer?  I can if you want.  Having shaq go in as a "pro" against some opponent is a publixity stunt and sorry but i doubt he has the time to really devot himself to the art.  It's like the quadraplegic who just fought.  Although noble in effort it was also an exercise in futility.  It makes the mma world into a freak show.  As for your scenario, no one plays in mma.  They are pros.  It's not a hobby.  Make lucid and direct correlations and examples if you want to be taken more seriously in the discussion.  Also pitting Shaq and conseco in overtime freet rhow decisions and someone saying he'll get submitted in some way or another is not participating in "the fantasy on a literary aspect", it's simply playing around. Participating would include actual feelings as to how it would play out technically and with out trying to be funny about it.
